Course Description

The goal of this course is to provide participants with a thorough understanding of the fundamental aspects of the 5G RAN and Core Network, covering both the Non-Standalone (NSA) and Standalone (SA) deployment options, including the concept of Network Slicing.

At first, an overview of the 5G System is provided, including the relevant architecture, the interfaces, the spectrum allocation and the key technology enablers. Next, the new 5G Quality of Service (QoS) framework is introduced, highlighting the main differences compared to the 4G QoS. The presentation of the 5G Radio Access Network follows, including the New Radio (NR) Air Interface principles, Massive MIMO and Beamforming methods, Dual Connectivity and Carrier Aggregation aspects and the concept of LTE-NR dynamic spectrum sharing. Next, the 5G Core Network is presented, explaining the role of the included Network Functions, the Service-Based Architecture and the required Management and Orchestration Framework (MANO). Moreover, the concept of Network Slicing is introduced, focusing on the relevant E2E aspects, as well as on the corresponding RAN and Core Network implementation principles. Finally, an overview of the evolution of 5G towards 6G is provided, with a focus on the technology trends and the relevant standardization efforts.

Through engaging topic discussion, including presentations of relevant case studies, participants in this course will develop a profound and robust understanding of the subject matter in a very short period of time.

Advanced Topics in Wireless: 5G NR, MTC, and Open RAN Course Series
Participants taking the three courses in the Advanced Topics in Wireless series will develop a comprehensive view on the 5G/NR technology, a profound understanding of the implementation aspects of all the ITU-specified use case categories, i.e. enhanced Mobile Broadband (eMBB), mIoT and URLLC, and a robust foundation on the network architecture evolution technology enablers towards fully open radio access networks. Complete all three courses in this series to earn a digital badge.

Special note:  This course is one of three courses in the Advanced Topics in Wireless series.  The three courses in this series include:

  1. 5G RAN and Core Network: Architecture, Technology Enablers and Implementation Aspects, 24-25 April 2024
  2. O-RAN: Disrupting the Radio Access Network through Openness and Innovation, 8-9 May 2024
  3. Machine Type Communications in 5G and Beyond, 22-23 May 2024
