Course Description

The marriage of ever-more sophisticated signal processing and wireless communications has led to compelling 'tele-presence' solutions - at the touch of a dialing key.  However, the 'quantum' leaps both in digital signal processing theory and in its nano-scale based implementation is set to depart from classical physics obeying the well-understood laws revealed by science.  And so, we embark on a journey into the weird and wonderful world of quantum-physics, where the traveler has to obey the sometimes strange new rules of the quantum-world. Hence, we ask the judicious question: can the marriage of applied signal processing and communications extended beyond the classical world into the quantum world?

This course will describe a three-pronged approach with an emphasis on the following:

  • quantum coding for improving the performance of all quantum systems
  • existing and future quantum key distribution networks
  • employment of quantum search algorithms for solving large-scale search problems in wireless systems with a long-term view

Who Should Attend

The course has primarily been crafted for communications engineering professionals who wish to enter or learn more about the world of quantum communications.  Postgraduate students, researchers and signal processing practitioners as well as managers looking for cross-pollination of their experience with other topics may find the coverage of the presentation beneficial.

Level of Instruction

Beginner to Intermediate.  No quantum communications background is required, but having Master-level background in communications is helpful.  Whilst this overview is ambitious in terms of providing a research-oriented outlook, potential attendees require only a modest background in wireless networking and communications. The mathematical contents are kept to a minimum and a conceptual approach if adopted.

A copy of the instructor's PowerPoint slides is included. Access to the streaming video recording is provided for 20 business days after the course has been taught. Earn 0.45 IEEE Continuing Education Units for participating and completing the post-course evaluation.
