Stephen O. Rice Award
Casey
L. Miller was born in Poughkeepsie, New York, in 1970.
He received the B.S. in electrical engineering from Binghamton
University, New York, in 1993 and the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees
in electrical engineering from the University of Arizona,
Tucson, A.Z., in 1996 and 1999. In 1999 and 2001, he was employed
as a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow with the University of
Canterbury in Christchurch, New Zealand.
His interests
involve image resolution enhancement algorithms, very-low
bit rate video coding and digital communication over time-varying,
frequency-selective channels. He is currently employed as
a consultant for Research Corporation Technologies in Tucson,
A.Z. but is never too busy to answers questions and would
welcome correspondence regarding his publications.
Desmond P. Taylor (F'94) was born in Rouyn, P.Q., Canada,
on July 5, 1941. He received the B.Sc. (Eng) and M.Sc. (Eng.)
degrees from Queen's University, Kingston, Ontario, Canada,
in 1963 and 1967, respectively, and the Ph.D. decree in electrical
engineering from McMaster University, Hamilton, Ontario, in
1972.
From July
1972 to June 1992, he was with the Communications Research
Laboratory and the Department of Electrical Engineering, McMaster
University. In July 1992, he joined the University of Canterbury,
Christchurch, New Zealand, where he is now the Tait Professor
of Communications. His research interests are centered on
digital communications systems with particular emphasis on
robust bandwidth-efficient modulation and coding, and associated
demodulation and decoding problems in the fading dispersive
channels typical of mobile satellite and radio communications.
Secondary interests include problems in multiple access and
networking. He is the author or coauthor of approximately
80 published papers and currently holds two U.S patents in
spread spectrum communications.
Dr. Taylor
is a Fellow of the Engineering Institute of Canada and the
Institute of Professional Engineers of Ontario, Canada.
Peter T. Gough (SM'97) was born in Dunedin, New Zealand,
in 1947. He received the B.E (with honors) and the Ph. D.
degrees from the University of Canterbury, Christchurch, New
Zealand, in 1970 and 1974, respectively.
He spent
approximately five years as a Postdoctoral Fellow and then
as an Assistant Professor with the Institute of Optics, University
of Rochester, Rochester, NY, and with the University of Manitoba,
Winnipeg, Canada. After working as a Consultant in California,
he returned to the Electrical and Electronic Engineering Department,
University of Canterbury, in 1980 where he is now a full professor.
