Distinguished Industry Leader Award Winner Biographies
Dr. Suk-Chae Lee currently serves as the Chief Executive Officer of KT Corporation, the largest telecommunications service provider in the Republic of Korea.
Since his appointment as the KT CEO in January 2009, he pursued for a complete change throughout the organization, encouraging more innovative ideas, stronger work ethics and efficiency. Also, he holds firm to his philosophy that a company should seek healthy ecosystem by pursuing harmonized growth by collaborating with small and medium companies.
His strong leadership was manifested especially when he successfully completed the historic merger between KT and its mobile subsidiary KTF on June 1st, 2009. This became a significant step for KT to grow further and expand as a global ICT company.
Before joining KT, Dr. Lee has made many distinguished contributions to the development and modernization of the Korean economy. As a longtime civil servant for almost thirty years, he held a series of significant positions in the government, including Chief Economic Secretary for President, Vice Minister of Finance & Economy and Minister of Information & Communications.
Dr. Lee holds a bachelor's degree in business administration from Seoul National University, an M.A. degree in political economy and a Ph.D. degree in economics from Boston University.

Kaoru Yano was appointed President of NEC Corporation effective April 1, 2006, after serving as the Senior Executive Vice President. During his tenure as Senior Executive Vice President, Mr. Yano’s responsibilities included company-wide management and R&D; he held a key position in driving the technological advancement of the NEC group.
Mr. Yano joined NEC in 1966. He spent the first two decades in the development of communications equipment, and was then assigned to NEC America, where he led the development and sales team of communications business for the North American market. He has since then held key positions mainly in the network infrastructure business for both Japanese and global markets, and has been instrumental in re-inventing the business to respond to the rapid change in the marketplace brought on by the Internet and shift to IP technologies.
Throughout his career, Mr. Yano has focused on driving innovation through advanced technologies, and building strong relationships with a diverse field of customers including telecommunications carriers, public sectors and enterprises worldwide.
Mr. Yano has resided in the US on three separate occasions, one of which is at the Graduate School of Stanford University where he received a master’s degree in Science in Electronics Engineering and is known for his broad international perspectives. He was elected an IEEE Fellow in 2008 “for his leadership in development of digital transmission systems.”

Arun Sarin, aged 52, graduated from the Indian Institute of Technology with a BS in Engineering in 1975. In 1978 he gained a MS in Engineering and a MBA from the University of California, at Berkeley.
He started his career as a management consultant before moving, in 1984, to Pacific Telesis Group in San Francisco. Commencing in corporate development, he was instrumental in the company acquiring the first cellular licences in the US as well as winning the first cellular licence in Germany and a PCN licence in the UK. He was subsequently appointed CFO and Chief Strategy Officer at Pacific Bell, before moving on to become Vice President and General Manager, San Francisco Bay Area Telephone Company, a Pacific Bell division with 12,000 employees.
Following the demerger from Pacific Telesis of the mobile and paging businesses to form AirTouch Communications, Arun was appointed Senior Vice President Corporate Strategy and Development where he developed and implemented a growth strategy encompassing partnerships and acquisitions, which included the merger with the US West wireless business.
On becoming President and CEO, AirTouch International, Arun was responsible for the acquisition of wireless licences in several overseas territories and establishing the management teams of these new ventures.
He then became President and CEO of AirTouch Communications where he was responsible for managing the cellular and paging operations in 14 countries and was a key negotiator in the successful acquisition of AirTouch by Vodafone Group Plc. Within the combined business, Vodafone AirTouch Plc, he was CEO US/Asia Pacific region, managing the Group’s operations in the US, Asia and Australasia. In addition, he headed the Global Technology division, responsible for the introduction of wireless internet services.
In 2000, with the successful merger of Vodafone AirTouch’s US businesses with those of Bell Atlantic and GTE to form Verizon Wireless, Arun, whilst maintaining a non-executive directorship of Vodafone AirTouch Plc, became CEO of Infospace.
In 2001 he joined Accel-KKR Telecom, a telecom investment and management business, where he evaluated numerous opportunities in the telecommunications industry around the world and oversaw the acquisition of Bell Canada’s Yellow Pages business.
In April 2003 he became CEO designate of Vodafone Group Plc and assumed the post of Chief Executive Officer on July 30th 2003.
Prior to becoming Chief Executive Officer, Arun had been a Non-Executive Director of The Gap Inc, The Charles Schwab Corporation and Cisco Systems Inc.
In April 2005, Arun’s appointment to the Court of Directors of the Bank of England was announced, which became effective on 1st June 2005 and is for a fixed three year term.
Dr. Henry Samueli is Co-Founder, Chairman of the Board, and Chief Technical Officer of Broadcom Corporation. Broadcom was founded in 1991 and is a global leader in providing semiconductor solutions for wired and wireless communications. Broadcom’s system-on-a-chip and software solutions enable the delivery of voice, video, data and multimedia to and throughout the home, the office and the mobile environment. Broadcom’s customers are the leading manufacturers of computing and networking equipment, digital entertainment and broadband access products, and mobile devices. Dr. Samueli is responsible for driving the vision of Broadcom's research and development activities as well as helping coordinate corporate-wide engineering development strategies. Broadcom had revenues of $2.7 billion in 2005 and employed 4,300 people worldwide at year end.
Since 1985 Dr. Samueli has also been a professor in the Electrical Engineering Department at the University of California, Los Angeles, where he has supervised research programs in broadband communications circuits and digital signal processing. He has published over 100 technical papers in these areas and he is a named inventor in 32 U.S. patents. He has been on a leave of absence from UCLA since 1995. Dr. Samueli has also been a Distinguished Adjunct Professor in the Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Department at UC Irvine since 2003. He was the Chief Scientist and one of the founders of PairGain Technologies, Inc., a telecommunications equipment manufacturer in the digital subscriber line (DSL) industry, and he consulted for PairGain from 1988 to 1994. From 1980 until 1985 he was employed in various engineering management positions in the Electronics and Technology Division of TRW, Inc., where he was responsible for the development of military broadband communications systems. Dr. Samueli received a B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from UCLA in 1975, 1976, and 1980, respectively.
Dr. Samueli serves on the UC President’s Board on Science and Innovation and he is Chair of the UCLA Chancellor’s Competitiveness Council. He is on the Board of Trustees of the UC Irvine Foundation and he is a member of the UC Irvine Chief Executive Roundtable. He is on the Industrial Advisory Boards of the Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science at UCLA and the Henry Samueli School of Engineering at UC Irvine. In 2000 he was awarded the University of California Presidential Medal, the UC Irvine Medal, the IEEE Circuits and Systems Society Industrial Pioneer Award, and the UCLA School of Engineering and Applied Science Alumnus of the Year. Dr. Samueli was elected a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) in 2000, a member of the National Academy of Engineering in 2003, and a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2004. In 2005 he was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Science degree from the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology, and the Edward A. Dickson Alumnus of the Year from UCLA.
The success of Broadcom Corporation has provided Henry and his wife Susan the opportunity to support many worthwhile organizations. Since Broadcom’s initial public offering in 1998 their family Foundation has committed over $180 million in grants and pledges in the areas of Education, Health, Social Services, Spirituality & Interfaith, and The Arts and in 2003 and 2004 they were listed among Business Week’s 50 Most Generous Philanthropists in the nation.
In December 2003, Henry and Susan purchased the management contract for the Arrowhead Pond of Anaheim sports and entertainment venue, creating Anaheim Arena Management, LLC, to oversee all operations of the arena, and in June 2005 they purchased the Anaheim Ducks National Hockey League club, the Arrowhead Pond’s largest tenant. Billboard Magazine listed the Arrowhead Pond as the third largest grossing arena in the world in concert revenue in 2005.

Mr. Lee received a BS degree from InHa University in Incheon, Korea, and joined Samsung in 1973. He served various positions in Samsung Electronics including Managing Director, Senior Managing Director of Wireless Communication Division, Vice President of Wireless Data Division, Executive Vice President of Wireless Communication Division, Executive Vice President of Telecommunications Network Business, before he became the President and CEO of Telecommunications Network Business in 2001.
Mr. Lee has led the R/D teams in Samsung Electronics to successfully implement the CDMA technology to commercial products in 1996, and to develop and implement the CDMA2000 1X technology in 2000 and CDMA2000 1X EV-DO technology in 2002, respectively. Recently, his team introduced the world’s first watch phone, the first 3.2 megapixel camera phone with optical zoom, and the first Digital Multimedia Broadcasting (DMB) handset.
Mr. Lee has been serving as the President of Cell Phone Advisory Council since 2001, the Vice Chairman of Chinese Advisory Council for the Federation of Korea Industries since 2002, the Chair of Korea Association of Photonics Industry Development since 2002, and a Vice President of Korea Society for Engineering Education (KSEE) since 2003. Mr. Lee has launched the 4 th Generation Mobile Communications Forum in 2003 and is now serving as a Vice General Chair of the IEEE International Conference of Communications (ICC 2005).
Mr. Lee received Korea Bronze Medal for Contribution to Industry in 1998, the CEO of the Year for Production Innovation Award in 2001, Information Community Award in 2001, Information & Telecommunication Grand Award in 2003, and the Gold Tower Order of Industrial Service Merit in 2003 from the Korean Government. He was listed as one of “The Stars of Asia ” by Business Week magazine in May 2002 and selected as “The Best CEO” by Korea Management Association. Mr. Lee is a member of the National Academy of Engineering of Korea.

Dr. Irwin Jacobs founded QUALCOMM Incorporated in 1985, serving as chairman and CEO. Dr. Jacobs has led QUALCOMM through a period of rapid growth to over 9,000 employees, with international activities in digital wireless telephony and mobile satellite communications and Internet software. QUALCOMM is a 1999 FORTUNE 500 company with fiscal year 1998 revenues in excess of $3.3 billion.
Previously, Dr. Jacobs founded LINKABIT, which merged with M/A-COM in August 1980.
From 1959 to 1966, Dr. Jacobs was an Assistant/Associate Professor of Electrical Engineering at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and from 1966 to 1972 he was a Professor of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD).
Dr. Jacobs received the B.E.E. degree in 1956 from Cornell University and the M.S. and Sc.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1957 and 1959, respectively.
Dr. Jacobs was recently awarded the Ernst & Young Information Technology Award for Global Integration by the Computerworld Smithsonian Award Program for outstanding contributions to global integration through the use of information technology. In 1994 Dr. Jacobs received the National Medal of Technology Award, which is the highest award bestowed by the President of the United States for extraordinary achievements in the commercialization of technology or the development of human resources that foster technology commercialization.

Mr Jorma Jaakko Ollila was born on August 15, 1950 in Seinajoki, Finland. He is married to Liisa Annikki (née Metsola) and they have three children (Jaakko, Anna and Matti). He earned a Master of Political Science degree in 1976 from the University of Helsinki, a Master of Science (Econ.) degree in 1978 from the London School of Economics, and a Master of Science (Eng.) degree in 1981 from the Helsinki University of Technology. In 1995 the University of Helsinki awarded Jorma Ollila a Ph.D. (Pol.Sc.) h.c. degree and in 1998 the Helsinki University of Technology awarded him a D.Sc. (Tech.) h.c. degree.

John Chambers is president and CEO of Cisco Systems, the worldwide leader of networking for the Internet. Since January 1995, when he assumed this position.
Chambers has grown the company from $1.2 billion in annual revenues to its current run-rate of approximately $18.9 billion. In the last year alone, Cisco saved more than $1.9 billion due to productivity increases from Internet business solutions, and gained more market share than all of its competitors combined.
Chambers has been lauded by government leaders and countless publications worldwide for his visionary strategy, his ability to drive an entrepreneurial culture, and his warm-hearted, straight-talking approach. Widely recognized for his evangelistic style, Chambers is considered one of the most innovative and dynamic leaders in global business today.
In March 2002, the National Investor Relations Institute, in conjunction with Barrons and Investor Relations magazines, recognized Chambers with their prestigious “Best Investor Relations by a CEO” award. IR Magazine said of Chambers: “John is not only the operator to fix this company, he is the best conveyor of the challenges the company has faced and the opportunity it faces now.” The Sunday Times, U.K., rated Cisco the number 7 best place to work. In February 2002, Fortune magazine rated Cisco in the top 15 best places to work and the second most admired network communications company in America. In January 2002 Cisco was voted the number one best employer to work for in Australia. Network World recently rated Cisco as one of the “10 most powerful companies in networking.”
In April 2002, John was awarded the “Spirit of Achievement Award” by the National Center for Learning Disabilities. He also received the Outstanding Achiever’s Award from the Lab School of Washington in November 2001. In June of last year, Chambers was presented with the American Society for Training and Development award for Champion of Workplace Learning and Performance. Chambers was given the award for his advocacy, commitment, and actions that affirm the value of workplace learning and performance.
In December 2000, Chambers was selected to serve on President George W. Bush’s transition team as a member of his Education Committee. In this role, he shared his expertise with the new administration and provided guidance on a broad range of policy matters related to Education. In November 2000, Upside Magazine ranked John Chambers as number six on the list of high-tech’s top 100 high rollers for 1999.
Chambers joined Cisco in 1991 as Senior Vice President, Worldwide Sales and Operations. Prior to joining Cisco, Chambers spent eight years at Wang Laboratories and six years with IBM. Chambers holds a law degree and Bachelor of Science/Bachelor of Arts degree in business from West Virginia University. He later received a Masters of Business Administration degree in finance and management from Indiana University. He is married and has two adult children.

Dr. Keiji Tachikawa assumed his current position of president of NTT DoCoMo, Inc., Japan's largest mobile telecommunication operator, in June, 1998. Before then, Dr. Tachikawa held a number of important posts in his 36-year career with both NTT and NTT DoCoMo, Inc.
From 1997 to 1998, Dr. Keiji Tachikawa was senior executive vice president of NTT DoCoMo, Inc. From 1996 to 1997, Dr. Tachikawa was senior executive vice president, Business Communications Headquarters of NTT. From 1995 to 1996, he was executive vice president of the Service Engineering Headquarters. From 1992 to 1995, he was senior vice president and general manager of the Kanto Regional Communications Sector. From 1991 to 1992, he was
executive manager of the Technology Research Department working on NTT's General Planning Headquarters. From 1990 to 1991, he was a senior executive overseeing NTT's mobile communications as well as packet network and visual communications business. From 1989 to 1990, he was a senior manager of the Business Strategy Planning Headquarters, where he was responsible for planning NTT's 21st Century Service Vision. From 1986 to 1989, he was director of the NTT America Representative Office in New York, where he founded NTT America Inc. in 1987, and became first CEO. He joined Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Public Corporation in 1962.
Dr. Tachikawa graduated from Tokyo University with a bachelor's degree in technology in 1962. In 1978, he graduated from MIT with a MBA, and in 1981 he received his Doctor of Engineering degree from Tokyo University. He is a regional chief of the Institute of Electronics and Communications Engineers (IECE) in 1995-1996, the largest communications technical institute in Japan. He is the author of several books in Japanese on the future of the communications and information industries.
Dr. Tachikawa was born in Gifu Prefecture in 1939. He is married and has a son and a daughter.
