Registration Opens for IEEE ICC 2017 - Paris, France, 21 – 25 May 2017

Registration is now open for IEEE ICC 2017 to be held on 21 – 25 May 2017 at the Palais des Congrès – Porte Maillot in Paris, France, which is located only minutes away from the Arc de Triomphe and the legendary Avenue Champs Elysées. The conference theme - Bridging People, Communities, and Cultures - reflects the rich cultural diversity of the Paris metropolis. The technical program will include over 1,200 technical papers disseminating the latest research results in communications and networking, 6 keynotes by industry leaders and eminent academic figures, 18 workshops and 24 tutorials on hot topics, as well as 18 industry sessions and panels.

IEEE ICC 2017 will start on Sunday, 21 May with 12 tutorials presented by leading researchers and industry experts and 8 workshops covering diverse advanced topics. Specific areas covered include the trends and technical challenges in 5G networks, Internet of things (IoT), green technologies, software defined networks, underlying basic technologies, and future services. The later that evening the conference will host the Welcome Reception, where attendees will have the opportunity to meet old friends and make new ones in a cozy setting.

Monday, 22 May will mark the start of the main conference with two keynotes in the Opening Ceremony. Keynote addresses will be delivered by Marcus Weldon, President of Bell Labs and Corporate CTO of Nokia, and Georges Karam, Founder, President and CEO of Sequans Communications, which is a world-leading LTE for IoT chipset solution provider for machine-to-machine (M2M) and Internet of things devices. The day will continue with technical presentations and industry panels organized in 18 parallel sessions. The Monday program will also feature the traditional Awards Luncheon during which a number of highly deserving colleagues will be recognized for their technical achievements and/or service to the society.

The program of Tuesday, 23 May will feature another keynote session with two distinguished speakers. The first speaker will be Wen Tong, CTO of Huawei, followed by Alain Aspect, a world-renowned scientist in the field of quantum optics and computing. The remainder of the day will be organized in three 90-minute time blocks during which there will be 18 parallel sessions for technical presentations and industry panels and sessions. Tuesday evening will feature the conference banquet, where attendees will enjoy traditional French cuisine along with entertainment in a very friendly and relaxed setting at the Bois de Boulogne which offers a spectacular view on the Eiffel Tower.

Programming for Wednesday 24 May will closely follow that of the previous day. The keynote session will feature another set of two eminent speakers. The first will be Serge Willenegger, Senior Vice President, Product Management of Qualcomm Technologies, Inc., and the second is Giuseppe Caire, a world-class figure in communication theory and wireless communications.

In the Exhibits Hall, which will be open from Monday, 22 May to Wednesday, 24 May, a number of companies will exhibit their technologies, new products and services. Morning and afternoon networking breaks will be centrally located in that area, and industry leaders will have the opportunity to make live podium presentations here a very large audience.

Finally, the program will conclude on Thursday, 25 May with 12 tutorials and 10 workshops devoted to very hot topics for future communications networks and technologies. Tutorials and Workshops are offered as separate packages with separate registrations. The registration for each one of these days gives access to any tutorial and any workshop on that day.

Food for Thought

“NFV- and SDN-related spend volume is forecast to ramp up in 2017, at which time use cases will be more defined and the cost benefits of using NFV and SDN will be more apparent. This will prompt holdout operators to jump on the bandwagon and aggressively pursue transformation with these technologies to avoid being left behind.” according to Chris Antlitz, telecom senior analyst at TBR.  Source: NFV and SDN market to hit $158B by 2021.

IEEE Communications Magazine Seeks Paper Submissions on Scholarship of Teaching and Supervision

IEEE Communications Magazine Seeks Paper Submissions on Scholarship of Teaching and Supervision

Call for Papers for IEEE Communications Magazine Feature Topic on
Scholarship of Teaching and Supervision

The Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) encourages educators to examine their own classroom practice, record their successes and failures, and ultimately share their experiences in a formal and scholarly way so that others may reflect on their findings and build upon teaching and learning processes.

The Scholarship of Research and Supervision (SoRL), a related concept that invites the same reflective approach to improving the quality of training through research, especially that conducted at the postgraduate level.

This feature topic on the Scholarship of Teaching and Supervision is intended to hasten the incorporation of SoTL and SoRL into communications engineering curricula by providing educators and researchers with an opportunity to share their experience, best practices and case studies.

Millimeter Wave vs. Below 5GHz Massive MIMO: Which Technology Can Give Greater Value?

Millimeter Wave vs. Below 5GHz Massive MIMO: Which Technology Can Give Greater Value?

Complimentary Tutorial

The purpose of this panel is to discuss and debate the inherent technical merits of the two most prominent fifth-generation (5G) wireless physical layer technologies: millimeter wave, and below 5 GHz Massive MIMO. Despite the fact that the efficacy of wireless technology is thoroughly testable by controlled, reproducible experiments, there is apparently little consensus within the wireless industry as to the best direction future technology should take. Too often technical discussions are diluted by the introduction of extraneous nontechnical factors, such as spectrum licensing policy, the reluctance of service providers to replace wireless infrastructure ahead of its projected lifespan, entrenched thinking that has the force of dogma, and the pressure of “not invented here.” Attaching excessive importance to merely subsidiary considerations ignores that fact that the wireless industry is exceedingly wealthy (service providers spent more than $40 billion on 65 MHz of spectrum in the 2015 FCC AWS-3 auction) and that advanced communications are of ever increasing importance to young people for which they can be expected to pay increasing fractions of their income.
