IEEE ComSoc Lahore Section  2017 ComSoc Summer School Program

IEEE ComSoc Lahore Section, in collaboration with Al-Khawarizmi Institute of Computer Science (KICS), University of Engineering and Technology Lahore, and Fast National University Lahore organized a 4-day “Asia Pacific IEEE COMSOC Summer School 2017” on 11 July 2017 through 14 July 2017.

Other collaborators were HEC Pakistan, IEEE UET and IEEE FAST. It was inspirational for all who attended, particularly for the young engineers in Pakistan who participated in this 4-day summer school. The school was designed for new graduates, MS, and PhD students so that they could advance their knowledge and research activities. IEEE COMSOC Summer School has a historical background as well, as it first started in 2015 in Italy.

The opening ceremony of the IEEE COMSOC Summer School 2017 took place at FAST NU Lahore on 11 July 2017. The event began with a video message by Prof. Dr. Vincenzo Piuri, a Full Professor at the University of Milan, Italy, who said that it was his honor to address to the participants. He mentioned that the event was a unique opportunity to learn new trends in communication technology since it allowed us to share this experience together. He revealed that technology empowerment benefitted not only Pakistan, but also other countries. Dr. Piuri congratulated IEEE ComSoc Lahore Section, KICS-UET and FAST-NU for conducting this event in Pakistan.

Prof. Fazal Ahmad Khalid, Vice Chancellor University of Engineering and Technology Lahore was the honorable chief guest at the opening on 11 July 2017. VC UET said that IEEE COMSOC was a good initiative and would surely bring lucrative results. He also mentioned that it would be beneficial for both the industry and academia. He appreciated the technological advancements in the country and emphasized the efforts and contributions of our students who played active roles in smart world and smart technologies. Other distinguished guests included Prof. Dr. Waqar Mahmood, Director KICS UET and Sultan Qaboos IT Chair; Prof. Dr. Noor Muhammad Shaikh, GC University Lahore; Dr. Sayyed Aaun Abbas; Dr. Tariq Jadoon; and Mr. Kashif Bashir, LUMS and Chair IEEE COMSOC Lahore Section.

This year IEEE COMSOC Summer School 2017 witnessed 65 research participants from nine different universities of Pakistan, as well as 14 speakers including five from abroad and nine from national universities. International speakers were from China, Saudi Arabia, Estonia, Ireland and Malaysia; national speakers were from LUMS, COMSATS Lahore, UET Lahore, and Mehran University Jamshoro.

The attendees were treated to a number of talks coupled with speeches by the guests.  Featured speakers were Dr. Mohamed-Slim Alouini, Dr. Momin Uppal, Dr. Zartash Uzmi, Dr. Ghalib Shah, Dr. M. Majid Butt, Dr. Faisal K. Shaikh, Dr. Ubaid ullah Fiaz, Dr. Muhammad Tahir, Dr. Sobia Baig, Dr. Hussain Mahdi, Dr. Waqar Baig, Mr. He Gang, and Dr. Muhammad Mahtab Alam. The topics ranged from Internet Censorship Research, USAID Fulbright and other Scholarship opportunities abroad, to Smart Grid Communication technology, FM Radio Broadcast Using RTL Software, Internet of Things (IoT), Polar Codes, Shared Spectrum Access, 5G Wireless Communication Networks, Wireless acoustic sensor network and a number of others. There were paper presentations and a panel discussion on the how to elevate research in Pakistan.

Attendees also went on two visits to local areas. The first visit included a trip to the best eye-candy locales of the city of Lahore. The second trip included a technical tour of Punjab Safe City Head Quarters where participants were briefed by Mr. Akbar Nasir Khan, Chief Operating Officer and Project Director PPIC3. He showed how the city was monitored by hundreds of cameras and how all of the emergency services are integrated into a single hotline.

The chief guest of the closing ceremony was Engr. Jawed Salim Qureshi, Chairman Pakistan Engineering Council. He said that the Pakistan Engineering Council working closely with the government and industry for the betterment and good future of the students who were appointed as internees. Mr. Jawed Salim Qureshi also said that Pakistani engineers had been doing well not only in Pakistan, but also across the world to prove their mettle. He said that the formula of success was being a champion. Mr. Akbar Nasir Khan, Chief Operating Officer Punjab Safe City Authority stated that what he learned from his education was leadership and it was what took you to the heights of success. Mr. Edward Zhang, Vice President Huawei Technologies China, spoke about the CPEC and Huawei’s ICT contribution in Pakistan. Prof. Dr. Fazal Ahmed Khalid, Vice Chancellor UET Lahore appreciated the efforts of Kashif Bashir, Chair IEEE COMSOC Lahore Section, and the volunteers for successfully organizing this year’s event between KICS-UET and FAST NU. Prof. Dr. Waqar Mahmood, Director KICS UET delivered review and recommendations in his speech.

Other guests included Prof. Dr. Suhail Aftab Qureshi, Dean EE UET Lahore; Prof. Dr. Amjad Hussain, Director FAST NU Lahore; Mr. Kashif Bashir, Chair IEEE COMSOC Lahore Section; and Mr. Usman Munawar, Secretary IEEE Lahore Section. The guests were given souvenirs and shields and the participants and the event organizers were awarded with the certificates.

IEEE Journal on Selected Areas in Communications (J-SAC) Seeking New Editor-in-Chief

Opportunity is knocking. Apply for the Editor-in-Chief position for the highly respected publication - IEEE Journal on Selected Areas in Communications (J-SAC).
The deadline is 12 November, 2017.

The IEEE Journal on Selected Areas in Communications (J-SAC) is devoted to  specific technical topics and thus provides to J-SAC readers a collection of up-to-date papers on those topics. These issues are valuable to the research community and become valuable references. The technical topics covered by J-SAC issues span the entire field of communications and networking. J-SAC publishes only papers that are submitted in response to a Call-for-Papers.

The current Editor-in-Chief will complete his term on 31 December 2017. The ideal candidate for the upcoming Editor-in-Chief position is well respected in the field, known for ethics and integrity, and has demonstrated management skills. The selected candidate is expected to assume the roles and responsibilities of the Editor-in-Chief including the selection of associate editors, governance of the entire editorial board, and ensuring that the standards of the journal are sustained. The period of service will be two years, renewable for one additional term.

The Editor-in-Chief is responsible for appointing Editorial Board members, setting goals, updating topical areas, overseeing the review process, handling appeals, and handling cases of plagiarism among other topics.

Eligibility: Must have a strong record of editorial activities and excellence in communications. According to the charter, the candidate must also be a member of IEEE Communications Society. 

Selection Process: The nominations will be accepted for the EIC position until
12 November 2017. Based on a holistic evaluation of all EIC candidates, a ranked short list will be generated by a selection committee, and final selected candidate will be selected and appointed by the VP Publications.

IEEE Network Seeking New Editor-in-Chief

Opportunity is knocking. Apply for the Editor-in-Chief position for the highly respected publication – IEEE Network. The deadline is 15 October, 2017.

IEEE Network, published bimonthly, offers readers topics of interest to the networking community. As such, IEEE Network provides a focus for highlighting and discussing major computer communications issues and developments. The articles are intended to be surveys or tutorials, slanted towards the practical, and comprehensible to the nonspecialist, as well as practitioners.

The ideal candidate for the upcoming Editor-in-Chief position is well respected in the field, known for ethics and integrity, and has demonstrated management skills. The selected candidate is expected to assume the roles and responsibilities of the Editor-in-Chief including the selection of associate editors, governance of the entire editorial board, and ensuring that the standards of the magazine are sustained.
