ComSoc Training Offers Two Wireless Engineering Courses this August

The August 3rd one-day online course on LTE is right around the corner! If anyone is interested in attending, register by July 27th to reserve a spot. Seats are limited. 

Whether it's a one-day or 5-Day course, each registrant receives a course completion certificate and earns IEEE Continuing Education Units (CEUs) upon successfully completing the course. Register by 8 August for the 5-Day course brings a saving of $100.

LTE for the Wireless Engineering Practitioner: Fundamentals & Applications

LTE (Long Term Evolution) is the most recent cellular system to be deployed. This course focused on the evolution of wireless communications technology and networks with a concentration on an end-to-end LTE system view and the influence of emerging IP networks. Topics addressed include: 

- Evolution of wireless core networks
- Access networks and wireless services
- LTE technology, standards, and features
- Phased evolution
- Service architecture, network management, security
- How LTE may develop over the next 3-5 years
- Implications of moving toward all IP based networks & services

Instructor: Daniel Wong

Daniel Wong is the President of Daniel Wireless LLC, a California-registered company that provides consulting and training in wireless, networking and software. Daniel has 18 years experience in wireless communications, both in industry and academia. His research work has covered a wide range of areas in wireless communications and has been widely published in top journals and conferences. Daniel is also an experienced speaker and teacher, having taught many highly-rated university level courses, industry short courses and tutorials at conferences, to a wide range of students from industry, government and academia. He is a member of the Practice Analysis Task Force that helped create IEEE’s WCET certification program, and a co-author and co-editor of the Wireless Engineering Body of Knowledge (WEBOK). Daniel is also the author of Wireless Internet Telecommunications (Artech House, 2004). Originally from Malaysia, he received The Outstanding Young Malaysian award in 2007 (in the Science and Technology category). Daniel graduated with a BSE (with Highest Honors) from Princeton University, and an MSc. and Ph.D from Stanford University, all in electrical engineering.

Each registrant will earn 0.6 IEEE Continuing Education Units (CEUs), a course completion certificate, receive a copy of the instructor's slides.

5-Day Virtual Intensive Course on Wireless Communications Engineering

WHEN: 22-26 August 2011
TIME: 9:00am - 3:00pm EDT

This five day online course provides a review of wireless communication technologies fundamental knowledge (basics) and move on to a more comprehensive discussion of RF Engineering, Propagation as well as Wireless Access Technologies, Network & Service Architecture, Network Management & Security, Facilities Infrastructure, and Agreements, Standards, and Policies. 

All registered students will have access to the course material presented (PowerPoint slides and audio) for 7 days after the live event. 

Instructors: Javan Erfanian, Daniel Wong

Javan Erfanian is a Distinguished Member of Technical Staff. He has been an IEEE Communications Society Distinguished Lecturer for years, an editor and author for the Wireless Engineering Book of Knowledge, and a member of IEEE WCET (Wireless Communications Engineering Technologies) Industry Advisory Board. He has about 20 years of experience in telecommunications research, lectures, and practice. He has taught many academic and industry courses and programs, particularly on Communications and Wireless Systems. In his IEEE involvement, Javan was also Chair of Communications Society in Toronto, and the Canadian correspondent for Communications Magazine in late 90s. He received the IEEE Millennium Medal in 2000. His earlier publications are cited in research journals and textbooks. Javan has extensive experience in wireless industry. His recent contributions to research forums & standards bodies have focused on future wireless technologies from service environment and user interaction to next-generations of technologies, networks and operational excellence.

Enjoy the IEEE Communications Magazine with your iPad!

The IEEE ComMag iPad application brings all the 2011 issues to the iPad users among members. ComSoc members can now download it free of charge from the App Store directly from your iPad. 

For potential members who would like to join the IEEE ComSoc community, a "Join" button from the App takes to the website with membership info.

To get started on iPad:

At the App Store from your iPad, simply search for IEEE Communications Magazine, and download the free app (see snapshots below). After installation is complete, click on app icon ("C" on a blue globe background), and login with the email and password you normally use for the Digital Delivery of the magazine. A button for password help is also there.

The IEEE ComMag bookshelf (or Library) on your iPad shows issues since January 2011. Simply touch the cover of an issue and it will start the download. 

To read the magazine on iPad:

Turn pages by swiping. Double tap or pinch the page to zoom. Tap once and the tool bar appears offering different functions such as Keyword search, Thumbnails, Table of contents, Bookmarks for the pages, and a Library button to return to the bookshelf.

Competition for 2011 IEEE ComSoc Young Researcher Award (EMEA Region) has just Started

Competition for 2011 IEEE ComSoc Young Researcher Award (EMEA Region) has just Started

 

The “IEEE ComSoc Young Researcher Award for the Europe, Middle East, and Africa Region” is sponsored by the IEEE Europe Middle East and Africa (EMEA) Region.  This award honors researchers who have been very active in the IEEE through ComSoc publication and conference activities over the last three years.

An Awards Committee was set up to review the applications, and three excellent candidates will be selected for the Award. The upper age limit for this award is 35. Applicants must be an IEEE member, and resident in the EMEA Region. The “IEEE ComSoc Young Researcher Award for the EMEA Region” will be awarded to the best candidate.

Congratulations to the 2010 winner Joao Barros from Portugal, and the two runner-up outstanding young researchers Alexandre Amat of France, and Ozgur Akan of Turkey. The awards were presented at ICC-2011 in Kyoto, Japan. (Ozgur Akan – runner up received his award through the mail).

Director EMEA Region Tariq Durrani announced that the competition has just started again this year.

Closing date for Submissions is 1 October 2011, and the Announcement of Awardees is scheduled for 30 November 2011.
