Disaster Recovery Networks

Date: Monday June 24, 2002
Time: 8:30 A.M. - 5:00 P.M.
Room:

Communication networks play a key role following a disaster such as a fire, structural collapse or an earthquake. They can be used to locate victims, track emergency rescue workers, and provide communication capabilities to victims and rescue workers. They can also provide communication capabilities to concerned parties such as family members as well as to other assistance providers such as police, government agencies, etc.

The 1st IEEE Workshop on Disaster Recovery Networks invites participation in this international forum on innovative network technologies, architectures, and services that can be effectively deployed during disaster recovery.

Discover Magazine and IEEE Communications Society will present a roundtable discussion on Monday, 24 June, 2002 from 15:30 to 17:00. A distinguished panel of eight experts on computing and engineering will tackle the controversial topic: "Will software replace engineers?" An article based entirely on this discussion will appear in an upcoming issue of Discover. Find out long before the reading public does just how quickly good software is replacing years of education and skill. Can a novice design a decent memory chip without ever having taken a course in computing? Does good software solve most math, engineering and design problems that years of human skill and expertise used to be better at? Are engineering problems becoming so complex that even a large group of engineers can't design something like the Pentium IV without computers? These and many more questions will be answered in this lively presentation. And bring your own attitude and ideas -- the question and answer session following the roundtable is certain to be fun.

This event is open to all attendees of INFOCOM 2002.

The Fifth IEEE Conference on Open Architectures and Network Programming continues the tradition of a lively international forum on open and programmable networks. Advances in open and programmable network elements are redefining network software architectures and moving control and management systems away from traditional closed/rigid solutions. OPENARCH 2002 will foster understanding of these new network architectures and techniques. OPENARCH 2002 will be held in conjunction with Infocom 2002 on June 28-29 in Hilton New York.
