Tutorial #5 - New Access Technologies: XDSL and Others

John M. Cioffi, Stanford University, Amati Communications Corp
John M. Cioffi (SM'97) received the BSEE in 1978 from Illinois (Champaign) and the PhDEE degree in 1984 from Stanford. He worked as a modem designer at Bell Laboratories from 1978-1984, and as a disk read-channel researcher at IBM from 1984-1986. He has been on the faculty of Stanford since 1986, where he is now a tenured associate professor. He founded Amati Communications Corp in 1991 and served as an officer and director from 1991-1998.

Cioffi's specific interests are in the area of high-performance digital transmission and storage systems where he has over 100 publications, and 20 patents, all of which are licensed. Cioffi is an Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE). He received the 1991 IEEE Communications Magazine best paper award and the 1995 T1 Outstanding Achievement Award of the American National Standards Institute. Cioffi was an NSF Presidential Investigator from 1987-1992 and has served in a number of editorial positions for IEEE magazines and conferences.



Alan J Weissberger, Founder and Technical Director of Data Communications Technology
Alan J Weissberger,is the founder and Technical Director of Data Communications Technology (DCT), a technical consulting firm founded in early 1983, Alan J Weissberger specializes in telecommunications standards and their implementation. His clients have included end users, network providers/ telcos, equipment and semiconductor manufacturers. In 1995 and 1996 Alan was the principal architect for the European Commission's private ATM network - the largest in Europe.

DCT was a Principal Member of the ATM Forum from 1993 to 1996 and Alan attended over 15 Technical Committee meetings during that time. Alan has lectured extensively on network and telecom topics. He is very well known in Europe, Japan, South America, and South Africa for his seminars and published papers.

Dr. Weissberger has over 30 years of computer and communications engineering and planning experience. He was an adjunct professor at Santa Clara University from 1975- 1988, where he established the Graduate EE Telecom curriculum and taught 42 graduate EE classes.. He is a Sr Member of the IEEE and has degrees from SUNY Stony Brook, Northeastern, MIT. Currently, AlanŐs main focus is ATM over ADSL and VDSL. It is in this capacity that he represents several clients (NEC-USA, Tollgrade Communications, and Coppercom) in the T1E1.4 standards committee, the ITU-T SG 15 xDSL project, and the ADSL Forum.
