Welcome to the April 2004 issue of IEEE ComSoc e-News.

Welcome to the April 2004 issue of IEEE ComSoc e-News. This issue highlights new enhancements to the ComSoc Digital Library, announces the first annual IEEE Secon 2004 and reveals the top 10 most popular articles in ComSoc peripdoicals for Febrary 2004. Also, we include the latest information in Standards, Periodicals, and Imminent Events.

2. ANNOUNCEMENTS

Digital Library Enhancements

- All 2003 conference proceedings are now included in the ComSoc Digital Library
.
- The basic Patent Citation integrates patents by linking them to the ComSoc articles and displaying all citing patents on
each article's summary page. The Patent Citations are in the bottom section of the mini-paper. For an example, go to http://dl.comsoc.org/cocoon/comsoc/servlets/GetPublication?id=144687.

- IEEE Communications Surveys & Tutorials - Is now included in the Publications Ontology of the ComSoc DL under
the new category called "Other Publications".

The USC Andrew and Erna Viterbi School of Engineering Receives Large Donation

Qualcomm founder Andrew J. Viterbi, a pioneer in cell phone technology, and his wife, Erna give $52 million to the USC School of Engineering. The gift ­ the largest ever to rename an existing school of engineering ­ will expand the school’s endowment and fuel its continued ascent.

Birthdays:

4 April, 1823
Carl Wilhelm Siemens was born in Lenthe, Germany. Siemens worked in telegraphy and directed an electrical manufacturing company.His work on the regenerative open-hearth furnace, which became a major challenger to the Bessemer furnace in the production of steel,caused many to regard him as a pioneer in mechanical engineering.


Events:

1 April, 1976
Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak, founded the Apple Computer Company. The Apple II computer
was the definitive first generation personal computer.

5 April, 1919
U.S. Navy officials and executives of General Electric agreed to form the Radio Corporation of America (RCA).
Many important innovations in electronics came from the RCA Laboratories
