5. ANNIVERSARIES

This section of e-News summarizes anniversaries of significant events in the history of communications. It is made possible by the IEEE History Center. More historical information is available at http://www.spectrum.ieee.org/history/index.html.

Birthdays:

28 January, 1886
Hidetsugu Yagi who, together with Shintaro Uda, developed a (directional
short wave antenna) (http://www.ieee.org/organizations/history_center/milestones_list.html#Directive).

3 March, 1847
Alexander Graham Bell, inventor of the telephone, was born in Edinburgh, Scotland.

21 March, 1768
Jean Baptiste Joseph Fourier was born in Auxerre, France. The mathematical operation
invented by Fourier, and known today as the Fourier transform, became vital in many areas of science and
engineering, including communication theory.

16 March, 1859
Aleksandr Stepanovich Popov was born on 16 March (4 March o.s.) 1859 in Turinskje Rudniki, Russia.
A pioneer of wireless telegraphy, he is credited in Russia as the inventor of radio, although in most places Marconi is given priority.
In the Soviet Union, 7 May was celebrated as Popov Day, commemorating the date of his first transmission in 1896.

Events:
1 February, 1893
Thomas A. Edison completed work on the world’s first motion-picture studio,in West Orange, N.J.
