Welcome to the July 2004 issue of IEEE ComSoc e-News. This issue announces the results of the 2003 Journal Citation Report in telecommunications, reminds ComSoc members to vote in the 2004 IEEE Communications Society Election, reports on Second Global Sister Society Summit and two student chapter events plus the the top 10 most popular articles in ComSoc periodicals for May 2004. Also included is the latest information in Standards, Periodicals, and Imminent Events.

2. ANNOUNCEMENTS

2003: IEEE ComSoc publications are 9 of the top 10 in telecommunications

IEEE periodicals rank highly in nearly 25 of the approximately 170 categories in the 2003 Journal Citation Reports. IEEE published 9 of the top 10 and 12 of the top 20 in the Telecommunications category. Find out more at Publication Impact factors out for 2003.

2004 Communications Society Election

The 2004 ComSoc election for President and Members-at-large is underway! Ballots were mailed Friday, 28 May 2004 to all Higher Grade IEEE Communications Society members and Affiliates (excluding Students) whose membership was effective prior to 30 April 2004. The ballot contains your member number and your control ballot number - both are necessary in order to vote electronically. For more details, see ComSoc Election

CCNC 2005 CFP Deadline near

The Call for Papers for CCNC 2005 ends July 9, 2004. For more information, please check the CCNC 2005 web site.

Second Global Sister Society Summit

ComSoc hosted the Global Sister Society Summit on June 21 durring ICC 2004. The summit was chaired by Naohisa Ohta, Director – Sister Societies, and Nim Cheung, Vice President – Society Relations Council. Goals included enhancing sister society relationships and exploring ways to exchange and disseminate information. For more details, see Global Sister Society Summit

Fourth Annual Wireless Telecommunications Symposium, WTS 2004

On May 14-15 Cal Poly Pomona's IEEE Communications Society Student Branch held its Fourth Annual Wireless Telecommunications Symposium. The event had 200 attendees from 11 countries with 24 accepted papers. For more information, see WTS2004.

Guadalajara Student Branch Hosts Conference

The student branch hosted the conference on March 30-April 2, attracting 1000 students from all over Mexico. Celia Desmond, Past President of IEEE Communications Society was a keynote speaker. The event was organized by a committee of students from six Guadalajara universities. For more information, see Guadalajara Conference.

28 June, 1886
John Renshaw Carson, a Bell Labs researcher, pioneering communications engineer and AIEE Fellow was born in Pittsburgh, PA USA.

29 June, 1903
Alan Dower Blumlein, prolific inventor who contributed to many fields, including telephony, stereo recording, and radar was born in London, UK.

3 July, 1886
John Howard Dellinger, radio pioneer was born in Cleveland, OH USA. Among his contributions was the development of the radiosonde, a balloon-borne device that radioed meteorological data to weather stations.

Events:

4 July, 1054
Chinese astronomers made the first observation of a supernova whose remnants we now know as the Crab Nebula, perhaps the most intensely studied bright nebula in the sky.

4 July, 1861
Western Union began construction on a telegraph line between St. Joseph, Mo., and Sacramento, CA USA It was completed on 24 October 1861, it was the final link in the first high-speed communications link between the Atlantic and Pacific coasts.
