ComSoc members please note the new title of the Communications Society Digital Library (formerly the
EPP - Electronic Periodicals Package). Look for it on your 2005 member renewal.
For the latest information on the IEEE compliance with the regulations of the ITAR and OFAC
IEEE has completed changes to its computer systems that enable the organization to re-establish

5. ANNIVERSARIES

Birthdays:
5 November, 1936
Michael Leonidas Dertouzos, a computer scientist, inventor, and faculty member at MIT for 37 years,
was born in Athens, Greece. Professor Dertouzos was made an IEEE Fellow in 1976.
8 November, 1923
Jack St. Clair Kilby, Nobel Prize winner and IEEE Member, was born on this day in Jefferson City, Mo. Kilby
developed the integrated circuit and was winner of the 1986 IEEE Medal of Honor, 1989 Draper Prize and the
1999 Eta Kappa Nu Vladimir Karapetoff Award.

At a meeting of the International Meridian Conference in Washington, D.C., Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) was
universally adopted.
4 November, 1952
CBS television coverage of the Presidental election featured the UNIVAC computer that accurately predicted the
victory of General Dwight D. Eisenhower based on early returns.
7 November, 1994
The EE Times publicizes the "floating point bug" in the Pentium chip. The chip's maker, Intel, admitted prior
knowledge of the flaw but had not made the information public since it did not think the bug would cause problems.
