5. ANNIVERSARIES

This section of e-News summarizes anniversaries of significant events in the history of communications. It is made possible by the IEEE History Center.

Birthdays and Anniversaries:

2 December, 1881
Heinrich Georg Barkhausen was born in Bremen, Germany. He was the head of an institute for communications engineering and a Fellow of the IRE. He was a contributor to the study of electron tubes, acoustics, and magnetism. Among other inventions, he discovered the eponymous Barkhausen effect (that a steadily increasing magnetic field causes the magnetization of a ferromagnetic material to increase in small jumps, rather than continuously). He died on 20 February 1956 in Dresden, Germany.
