IEEE Personalizes Membership Web Site
Finding out what the IEEE offers members just got easier. A new Web site, called the member portal, brings the benefits of membership together into one place for all to see. The portal also includes a new area called myIEEE, where members can find everything they want to know about
their membership data and affiliations. MyIEEE will display personal information such as membership grade, subscriptions, and section and society.

IEEE Now Offers Full-text Search of All Online Content for Members and Subscribers
All 1.1 million IEEE online technology documents are now full-text searchable, a move enabled by last month's launch of IEEE Xplore 2.0. IEEE
Xplore is the online delivery system which powers IEEE online subscriptions for organizations and individuals, including collections like the IEEE/IEE
Electronic Library. It contains documents from IEEE journals, magazines, transactions, and conferences, all active IEEE standards, and journals and
conference proceedings from Europe's Institution for Electrical Engineers (IEE). Also with the launch of IEEE Xplore 2.0, all non-subscribing guest
researchers may now, for the first time, conduct free keyword searches of IEEE abstracts directly from the IEEE Xplore home page.

Grant Applications Go Online
Applying for grants from the IEEE Foundation is simplified now that applications can be filled out and submitted online. Grants can range into
the tens of thousands of dollars for projects that meet the foundation's goals of developing educational and public information programs that
support historical research services and subsidizing workshops that facilitate electronic information exchange. Find out more at

3.3 CHAPTER NEWS

Local Kids Benefit From IEEE Group
With the help of the IEEE Northern Virginia Graduates of the Last Decade (GOLD) group, youngsters from the Parkview Community Center in
Washington, D.C., built a small oscillator composed of transistors, flashing light-emitting diodes, and a speaker that clicked or beeped
to the time constant of the circuit. This is just one of several community outreach activities this GOLD group has been involved with.

Web Sites Need Not Be Lost in Translation
An estimated 30 percent of IEEE members do not speak English as a first language, leaving a large population who may be facing difficulties, as the
majority of IEEE publications and Web sites are in English. But some IEEE regions and societies are not content to assume members are fluent
in English and, therefore, are translating Web sites and publications into other languages. Find out more at
http://boldfish.ieee.org/u/english8y/08135741

Sections Congress Makes Good Leaders Better
Section leaders usually have a good sense of what individuals want from their IEEE membership, but a little extra guidance never hurts. That's
where the triennial Sections Congress comes in, providing these volunteer leaders the training and guidance they need to give the
members of their sections more information about what the IEEE has to offer. Read more about this year's congress, to be held 14-17 Oct. in
Tampa, Fla. at http://boldfish.ieee.org/u/sections8z/08135741

IEEE History Center
.

Birthdays:

14 May 1874
Frank Conrad was born on this day in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He was a pioneer of radio broadcasting
and a radio engineer for Westinghouse. He received over 200 patents for mechanical and electrical devices. He was the winner of the 1930 Edison
Medal and the 1936 AIEE Lamme Medal.
10 May 1958 Ellen Ochoa was born on this day in Los Angeles, California. She is an electrical engineer who co-patented three inventions for an optical inspection system, an optical object recognition method, and a method for noise removal in images. In 1990, she was selected by NASA and a year later she became the first Hispanic female astronaut.
11 May 1924 Antony Hewish was born on this day in Fowey, Cornwall, Great Britain. He was co-recipient of the 1974 Nobel Prize in Physics for his contribution in the discovery of pulsars (cosmic objects that emit extremely regular pulses of radio waves).

20 May 1851 Emile Berliner (né Emil) was born in Hanover, Germany on this day. He made important contributions to telephone technology and developed a phonograph record disk. 25 May 1865 Pieter Zeeman was born at Zonnemaire, The Netherlands. He studied the influence of magnetism on the nature of light radiation, the so-called Zeeman effect. For this work he was awarded, with Hendrik Antoon Lorentz, the 1902 Nobel Prize in Physics. 26 May 1848 Alexander Muirhead was born on this day in Barley Mill, Scotland. He was a pioneer in wireless telegraphy and founded the company, Muirhead Limited. Events:
6 May 1916
The first radio telephone ship-to-shore conversation was made between the Navy Department and the battleship New Hampshire via wireless telephone.
16 May 1960
Theodore H. Maiman demonstrated the first functioning laser at Hughes Research Laboratories in Culver City, California.

18 May 1845
On this day, the first electromagnetic telegraph line in France (between Paris and Rouen) went into service.

22 May 1973
Robert Metcalfe, research engineer at Xerox's Palo Alto Research Center, came up with the idea of a local-area network that became Ethernet.

30 May 1987
North American Philips Company introduced the compact disc video (CD-V), designed to store full motion video and CD-Audio tracks.
