The Institute Wants to Know: How Do Techies Work? Do you spend half your day in meetings, use e-mail as your main form of
communication, or turn first to your co-workers to get help with a problem? The Institute's editors want to know if you agree with these
results from an IEEE survey commissioned to find out how today's technology professionals work, for possible use in an upcoming article. E-mail the editors for more information.

The IEEE Communications Society is developing a Wireless Communications Technology Certification. Interested in learning more or volunteering to help in the development process? Please e-mail Jack Howell, ComSoc Executive Director.

Tech Insider Webinar Series: Challenges In Battery Standards & Safety The recent recall of millions of laptop batteries has prompted the IEEE to revise its guidelines for the design, manufacture, and testing of Lithium-Ion batteries and packs. On 18 January 2007, IEEE Spectrum will sponsor a webinar to hear what industry experts have to say about these new developments and how they will impact future product designs. 6. ANNIVERSARIES

This section of e-News summarizes anniversaries of significant events in the history of communications. It is made possible by the IEEE History Center.

Birthdays and Anniversaries:

2 January 1926 Harold Wheeler invented diode automatic-volume-control, thereby solving a major problem of early radio—“blasting” when one moved from a weak or distant station to a powerful or nearby station.

3 January 1906 This day marks the 100th anniversary of the first 2-way transatlantic wireless telegraphy between Fessenden's stations at Brant Rock, MA and Machrihanish, Scotland.

4 January 1941 An experimental microwave radar set was tested at the MIT Radiation Laboratory.

6 January 1838 An IEEE milestone! Samuel Morse and Alfred Vail conducted the first successful public demonstration of their telegraph system.

7 January 1927 Regular transatlantic commercial radiotelephone service, offered by AT&T and the British General Post Office, was inaugurated.

12 January 1968 AT&T announced its designation of 911 as a universal emergency number on 12 January 1968; the first 911 call was placed more than a month later on 16 February 1968.

21 January 1957 President Dwight D. Eisenhower’s second inauguration ceremony was videotaped by NBC and broadcast nationally. The videotape recorder, designed by inventor Ray Dolby, had been introduced the previous year, but Eisenhower’s inauguration marked the first nationally televised broadcast from videotape in the U.S.

25 January 1915 The transcontinental telephone line, making using of triodes in seven repeater stations, was formally opened at 4 p.m. Eastern standard time; it connected AT&T's headquarters in Manhattan with the Panama-Pacific Exposition in San Francisco.

January 2003 At 12:30 a.m. Eastern standard time, the computer worm “Slammer” hit its first victim; fifteen minutes later large parts of the Internet went out of service; the worm ultimately caused damage of about $1 billion U.S. dollars.

28 January 1878 The first telephone exchange (in New Haven, Connecticut, U.S.A.) began service with twenty-one subscribers.
