The
Society for the History of Technology (SHOT) will meet
in Washington, DC from 17 – 22 October 2007, and celebrate
its fiftieth anniversary. As part of that celebration, the Smithsonian’s
National Postal Museum will host a one-day symposium on the history
of communication technologies on 17 October. The event’s
organizers are the Mercurians, a Special Interest Group of SHOT,
and the National Postal Museum. The symposium will be open to
the public.
Proposals for papers
and panels on any topic related to the history of communication
technologies are welcome. The term “communication technologies”
is construed in the broadest sense to include all traditional
electrical and electronic forms of communication, such as telegraphy,
telephony, radio, and television, as well as postal systems,
semaphores, print media, and telematics, which combines computer
and communication technologies. Proposals from those new to
SHOT and the Mercurians—as well as those who are not yet
members of either—are welcome, regardless of discipline
or academic status (graduate student, independent scholar, or
professor).
The symposium will
take place at the National Postal Museum, 2 Massachusetts Ave,
NE, which is next to Union Station, a terminus for rail (Amtrak
and Marc) and Metro lines, making it convenient for those attending
the SHOT meeting and those coming from out of town. The submission
of proposal guidelines will follow SHOT guidelines, which are
posted at: http://www.historyoftechnology.org/annualmtg/2007SHOT_cfp.pdf.
Please email complete
proposals to Allison Marsh marsha@si.edu and Andrew Butrica
Mercurians@earthlink.net.
Please submit all paper and panel proposals by 1 May 2007.
Notification of accepted papers will be made in August 2007.
Symposium papers will be posted on the National Postal Museum’s
website and will be considered for possible publication.

TECHNICAL COMMITTEE NEWS
In
February 2007 TAOS elected Tarek El-Bawab
(Jackson State University, USA) as new Secretary.
We congratulate
with Tarek for this nomination. The last ComSoc event that Tarek
organized is the Globecom 2006 "Seventh
International Workshop on Optical Networking Technologies: Examining
the Case for Optical Burst Switching"
http://www.ieee-globecom.org/2006/W1.html
Moreover,
here is a short bio of Tarek (from the Globecom2005 web site):
Tarek S. El-Bawab is currently an Associate Professor at the Department
of Computer Engineering, Jackson State University, USA. His areas
of interest include optical networks and WDM, network architectures,
performance analysis, and next-generation switching/routing. He
has more than 22 years of experience in communication systems
and networks. Prior to Jackson State, he was with Alcatel USA
where he served as the project manager of the optical networking
project of the Network Strategy Group (NSG). Before this, he was
in optical-networking and WDM research for eight years with a
number of institutions: Alcatel-USA Research & Innovation
(Corporate
Research Center), the Department of Electrical Engineering at
Colorado State University (USA) and the Department of Electronic
Systems Engineering at the University of Essex (UK). Prior to
this he was system design engineer with Dar Al-Handasah Consultants
(Cairo head office) and telecommunication lead engineer in Greater
Cairo Metro project, where he was in charge of network design
and implementation. Dr El-Bawab has more than 50 publications
and patents in the field of optical networking. His book "Optical
Switching" is the most comprehensive scientific resource
in its subject. He serves as member of technical committees, and
as organizer
and chair of a number of IEEE/SPIE conferences/workshops.
He is Senior
IEEE member and member of the IEEE communication, computer, electron
device, Lasers and Electro-Optics and engineering management societies.
He has a B.Sc. in Electrical Engineering, and a B.A. in History,
from Ain Shams
University, Egypt. He holds a M.Sc. in Telecommunications and
Information Systems from the University of Essex, U.K, and an
M.Sc. in Solid State Science from the American University in Cairo.
He obtained his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Colorado
State University.
