From the President...

We're almost one month into the New Year and it sure seems as if time is flying. I've already lost track of the number of meetings and conference calls I and our other Society leaders and staff have had as we work towards meeting the goals of the "ComSoc 2.0 - Member Driven" President's Page from the January 2008 issue of IEEE Communications Magazine. We are all committed to looking for new and improved ways of making ComSoc membership ever more valuable and accessible to colleagues around the world. Future President's Pages will say more. For now, I refer you to the President's Page appearing in the February issue of Communications Magazine. Our Vice President of Technical Activities, Andrzej Jajszczyk, and I co-authored this article on "the bedrock of the Society," Technical Activities. Without our volunteer-based Technical Activities, we would have no Communications Society (or at least not as we know it today). And without such Technical Activities, IEEE would not have a steady flow of Intellectual Property coming from the grassroots professionals across our field. Technical Activities provide the basic "raison d'etre" for the various communities that exist within the Communications Society, including those centered around our over 22 technical committees (see http://www.comsoc.org/socstr/org/operation/techcom/committees.html). Our technical committees are "where the action is" for organizing conferences, doing publications, networking with colleagues from around the world, etc. I encourage you to read the article and to join one of our technical committees (technical committee membership is free - and worth infinitely more than the cost). Until next month, thanks for reading eNews and please stay tuned for more.
