1. WELCOME

Welcome to the Dec. issue of ComSoc e-News 2001.  As usual, we have compiled a list of upcoming paper submission deadlines for conferences and special issues of magazines/journals, the earliest of which is  Jan. 2. Readers interested in making submissions should check specific conference/special issue web sites for deadlines in case changes are made after publication of this e-News issue.

This issue has several announcements of new EICs, Associate Editors, TC officers, formation of a new TC, a report on the success of the Global Chapter Chairs Congress, a listing of the awards made in Globecom 2001, as well as other articles. It also contains an announcement of a 50th anniversary item that goes for sale: a 2-DVD set containing over 24000 papers published in the leading journals and conferences of ComSoc.

This is my final issue as Editor. I thoroughly enjoyed my term as Editor over these last two years. It was a great opportunity to work with several outstanding ComSoc individuals and to understand the various facets of this wonderful organization.  Many thanks to all the ComSoc volunteers and staff members who provided me input for e-News. Without your support, this newsletter would not have been possible. I wish I could name you all here, but space limitations prevent me from doing so. You all know who you are, and I can only say, it was a real pleasure working with you and I sincerely thank you all.

I must however recognize the hard work and contributions of a few individuals. Jack Howell, David Alvarez and Natasha Simonovski, ComSoc, generated and distributed the text (e-mail) version of all e-News issues. Eric Levine, ComSoc, attracted sponsorship for e-News. I thank them all very much indeed, and am glad to note that they will continue in the current roles to help the new Editor. I also thank Mark Karol, Avaya Labs, for his leadership and support of e-News in his role as Director of Magazines.

Finally, I am pleased to announce that Tim Moors, Polytechnic University, NY, has been appointed as the new ComSoc e-News editor, starting Jan. 2002. Congratulations to Tim! I look forward to reading his issues.

Adieu! Farewell! Auf Wiedersehn! Goodbye!
Malathi Veeraraghavan, Editor
