Special Issue on

Research & Standards: Leading the Evolution of Telecom Network Architectures

IEEE Wireless Communications Magazine

The emergence of communication paradigm, such as cloud computing, the Internet-of-Things, the mobile traffic explosion, and the expectation of ubiquitous connectivity, is driving what is perhaps the most significant transformation of the architecture of mobile and wireless network systems. Simply put, Telecom network architectures need to evolve to support an exponentially more complex and diverse set of applications. Not surprisingly, this challenge has been attracting ever-increasing attention from researchers in both academia and industry, including telecom standards experts. Although both communities have made outstanding contributions to communications, the two domains are frequently unaware of the capacities, expertise, and challenges faced by the other.

As enablers of global systems inter-operability, standards are at the heart of success of the communications industry. Since standardization is inherently a social enterprise, it is the perfect environment for promoting technologies that evolve an increasingly social world. Moreover, telecommunications-oriented standards development organizations such as IEEE, IETF, 3GPP (and others) have a decades-long track record as drivers of real technological change across the industry.

As part of an ongoing effort to spark new collaborations across the industry/academia boundaries, this Special Issue is soliciting original high-impact submissions on topics of relevance to the evolution of Telecom network architectures. Indeed, of particular interest are changes and/or enhancements to the architecture of existing systems and communication protocols developed by standards bodies to address emerging challenges, such as mobile traffic growth, machine-to-machine communications, and mobile cloud networking. We are soliciting original contributions, previously unpublished and not currently under review, that are focused on rethinking mobile network architecture and protocols, in connection to the following emerging applications:
