Communications Society Chapter – 2000

The year commenced with the Chapter EXCOM as follows: Dennis Hartley - Chair, Winston Smith - Vice Chair and Winston Browning. - Secretary/Treasurer.

There have been a number of behind the scene activities this year and in April, the meeting presentation was on Frame Relay and in June it was Asynchronous Transfer Mode. On Wednesday, 18th October, the meeting will be a Distinguished Lecture Presentation by Dr. Salah Aidarous. Dr. Aidarous is a member of the IEEE Communications Society Distinguished Lecture Tour and his topic will be INTERNET PROTOCOL (IP) NETWORKING: OPPORTUNITIES AND CHALLENGES.

This presentation has been advertised in the two main newspapers in Jamaica on Sunday, October 8 and 15. Also, there will be a radio interview on Tuesday, October 17 with Dr. Aidarous and the Jamaica Section Chair Dr. Halden Morris, by POWER 106 in Jamaica. There have been other initiatives to advertise this occasion and we expect over one hundred persons to attend.

The Chapter is committed to the transfer and dissemination of technology. We strongly encourage local engineering research and development, so as to assist the decision makers to determine solutions to engineering problems. One of the methods that will be deployed to achieve these objectives is to organize presentations on relevant topics.

Discussions are in progress to insert a link on the Jamaica Section's website to the Communications Society Chapter. This link is to provide current information relating to activities in the Communications Society.

The Nominations Committee Chair has been named and he is responsible to form a committee. They will recommend the Society's Executive Committee for year 2001. Communications Society members are urged to participate in this democratic process.

The first Regional Chapter Chair Congress (RCCC) is scheduled for November at GlobeCom. This conference will be in San Francisco, California, USA and Jamaica will be represented.
