Technologies have advanced and the scope of positioning solutions have expanded significantly since the U.S. FCC mandated automatic location reporting on emergency calls from cellular phones in the 1990's. However, many problems remain, particularly in regard to positioning accuracy indoors and in other environments where GPS operation is significantly limited.
Deployment of LTE and LTE Advanced, using OFDM modulation which was not incorporated in previous generation cellular networks, has obligated new methods for implementing handset and network based positioning as a backup to GPS and to gain flexibility in meeting the requirements of ever increasing location applications and services. Not only cellular networks have seen expansion of location applications, but wireless networks and mobile wireless links in general are seeing innovations in the ways that location awareness is being integrated along with special communication services.
This one-day course will put you at the forefront of the latest positioning and location technologies.
You will learn how TDOA (time difference of arrival) is implemented in LTE and how MIMO (multi in, multi out) can be utilized for positioning. Features of the GPS modernization program will be discussed, as well as the basic characteristics of other worldwide satellite navigation systems. Also, we explain Differential GPS and Carrier Phase measurement techniques for obtaining centimeter accuracy. The course includes an overview of the Kalman filter and how it is used in fusing different positioning methods for increased accuracy and reliability. The role of inertial measuring devices, accelerometers and gyroscopes, in wireless location systems will also be explained, as will a low frequency technology particularly applicable for emergency response operations.
An introduction to wireless positioning and location will provide the basic tools required to understand the advanced material that is the core of the course.

Who Should Attend

Although there are no specific prerequisites, for maximum benefit, familiarity with wireless principles and undergraduate engineering mathematics will be helpful. Some previous contact with location applications, services or techniques are desirable, although wireless positioning basics are included in the curriculum for review for those with no previous experience in location techniques.

Alan Bensky is an electronics engineering consultant with over 30 years of experience in analog and digital design, management, and marketing. Specializing in wireless circuits and systems, Alan has carried out projects for varied military and consumer applications and led the development of three patents on wireless distance measurement. Alan has taught electrical engineering courses and lectures on radio engineering topics and is the author of two books: Short-range Wireless Communication, Second Edition, published by Elsevier in 2004, and Wireless Positioning Technologies and Applications, Second Edition, Artech House, 2016. In addition, he is a contributing author to five other books dealing with wireless communication. Alan Bensky holds degrees of B.E.E and B.A. from Union College, Schenectady, New York, and M.Sc.E.E. from the Technion in Haifa, Israel. He is a senior member of IEEE and an IEEE certified Wireless Communications Professional.
