Technical Activities - Len Cimini

Len Cimini received a Ph.D.  in Elec. Eng. from the University of Pennsylvania in 1982, and, worked at AT&T, first in Bell Labs and then AT&T Labs, for twenty years.  In 2002, he Dr. joined the University of Delaware as a Professor in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department.  His research has concentrated on lightwave and wireless communications.  In these areas, he has published more than 140 journal and conference papers and has been awarded 21 US patents.  Dr. Cimini has been very active within the IEEE, and he was the founding Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE J-SAC: Wireless Communications Series.  Among other activities within ComSoc, he has served as the Chair of the Emerging Technologies Committee, the Director of On-Line Content, and two terms as a Member at-Large on the Board of Governors.   Currently, he is the ComSoc Vice President - Publications.  He was elected a Fellow of the IEEE in 2000 for contributions to the theory and practice of high-speed wireless communications.   In addition to two paper awards, in 2007, Len was given the James R. Evans Avant Garde Award from the IEEE Vehicular Technology Society for his pioneering work on OFDM for wireless communications.

Conferences - Abbas Jamalipour

Abbas Jamalipour is a Fellow of IEEE, IEICE, and IEAust, an ACM Professional Member, and an IEEE Distinguished Lecturer. He is the professor of ubiquitous mobile networking at the University of Sydney and holds a Ph.D. in electrical engineering from Nagoya University, Japan. He is the author of five technical books, nine book chapters, and over 250 technical papers in the area of wireless communications.
He was Editor-in-Chief IEEE Wireless Communications and currently is an editor for several scholarly journals. He is Chair of the Communication Switching & Routing TC, Vice Director of Asia Pacific Board, and a Past Chair of the Satellite & Space Communications TC, ComSoc. He was the General Chair of IEEE WCNC 2010, and has been a chair of a number of conferences including IEEE ICC, GLOBECOM, WCNC and PIMRC. He is a voting member of ComSoc’s Education Board, Conference Boards, and On-Line Content Board.  He was a Member-at-Large of the GITC, 2006-2010. He has received several prestigious awards such as the 2010 IEEE ComSoc Harold Sobol Award, 2006 IEEE ComSoc Distinguished Contribution to Satellite Communications Award, and 2006 IEEE ComSoc Best Tutorial Paper Award.

Member Relations - Nelson Fonseca

Nelson L. S. da Fonseca received his Ph.D. degree from the University of Southern California in 1994. He is Full Professor at the State University of Campinas, Brazil. He published 250+ peer-reviewed papers and supervised 50+ graduate students. He is the recipient of the Medal of the Chancellor of the University of Pisa and Elsevier Computer Networks Editor of Year 2001 award. Nelson Fonseca served as an elected Member-at-Large of ComSoc Board of Governors (2009-2011). As Director of Latin America Region (2008-2009) he changed members’ services in the region by creating the conference IEEE LATINCOM and the Latin America Awards. As Director of On-Line Service (2002-2003), he set the ground for several initiatives, leading ComSoc to better presence in the Cyberspace. He served as EiC of the IEEE Communications Surveys and Tutorials Journal (2007-2011) and a Senior Technical Editor of the IEEE Communications Magazine. He is past EiC of the IEEE ComSoc Electronic Newsletter and past Editor of the Global Communications Newsletter. He co-chaired over 20 IEEE conferences and founded the series of multimedia communications symposia in IEEE ICC/Globecom. He is past chair of the multimedia communications technical committee and of the communications systems integration and modeling technical committee.

Publications - Vincent Chan

Vincent W. S. Chan, the Joan and Irwin Jacobs Professor and member of the Claude E. Shannon Communication and Network Group at MIT, received his B.S.(1971), M.S.(1971), EE(1972), Ph.D.(1974) degrees from MIT. He was head of the Communications & Information Technology Division of Lincoln Laboratory and the Director of the Laboratory for Information & Decision Systems at MIT. He initiated the Laser Inter-Satellite Transmission Experiment and the GeoLITE Programs and formed the MIT/AT&T/DEC All-Optical-Network Consortium, the AT&T/Cabletron/MIT/Nortel/JDS Next Generation Internet Consortium (1998), and the MIT/Motorola/Teledesic/Globalstar Satellite Networking Research Consortium (2000). He was Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE Journal on Selected Areas of Communications Part-II from 2005 to 2009, and founded in 2009 and is serving as Editor-in-Chief of a new IEEE/OSA Journal: Journal of Optical Communications & Networking. He has served on the boards and technical advisory boards of many commercial companies and government agencies, and is currently a member of the Corporation of Draper Laboratory. He is a Fellow of IEEE and the Optical Society of America and is serving currently on the Board of Governors of ComSoc. His research focus is on communication and networks, particularly on free space and fiber optical communication and networks and satellite communications. His recent research emphasis is on heterogeneous network architectures with stringent performance demands.

Standards Activities - Alexander Gelman

Alexander D. Gelman received ME and Ph.D. (EE) from the City University of New York. Currently he is Chief Technical Officer of NETovations, LLC, Networking Research Consulting Group. During 1998-2007 Alex worked as Chief Scientist at Panasonic Princeton Laboratory, managing research programs in consumer communications and networking; 1984-1998 with Bellcore as Director-Residential Internet Access Architectures Research. During 30 years of industrial research, Alex worked in areas such as: spread spectrum, IPTV, DTV, Ultra Wide Band communications, Information Security, Internet Telephony and Multimedia. He has numerous publications and several patents, e.g. holds some of earliest DSL system patents. Alex served on several ComSoc committees, in publications and conferences, on inaugural steering committees for IEEE Transactions on Multimedia and ICME. He cofounded the Consumer Communications and Networking Conference (CCNC). Alex founded the ComSoc Standards Board and initiated several IEEE standardization projects. Alex is past chair of the Multimedia Communications Technical Committee. He served three terms as ComSoc Vice President and on the Board of Governors of IEEE Standards Association. Currently Alex is ComSoc’s Director of Standards and also member of the IEEE - SA Standards Board. Alex is 2006 winner of IEEE ComSoc´s Donald W. McLellan Meritorious Service Award.

Member-at-Large - Gerhard Fettweis

Gerhard Fettweis earned his Ph.D. from RWTH Aachen in 1990. Thereafter he was Visiting Scientist at IBM Research in San Jose, CA, working on disk drive read/write channels. From 1991-1994 he was Scientist with TCSI, Berkeley, CA, developing cellular phone chip-sets. Since 1994 he is Vodafone Chair Professor at TU Dresden, Germany, with currently 20 companies from Asia/Europe/US sponsoring his research. He runs the world’s largest cellular research test-bed in downtown Dresden.

Gerhard is an IEEE Fellow, Distinguished Speaker of IEEE SSCS, and recipient of the Alcatel-Lucent Research Award and IEEE Millennium Medal. He has spun-out nine start-ups. Gerhard was TPC Chair of IEEE ICC 2009 (Dresden), and has organized many other events. He was elected Member-at-Large of IEEE SSCS (1999-2004) and ComSoc (1998-2000). He served as Associate Editor for IEEE JSAC (1998-2000) and IEEE Transactions CAS-II (1993-1996). In 1991-1998 he was ComSoc’s delegate within the IEEE Solid State Circuits Council.

Gerhard is a member of ComSoc’s Awards Committee and the IEEE Fellow Committee, and is active in ComSoc Technical Committees (Communication Theory, Wireless). During 2008-2009 he chaired the Germany Chapter of IEEE IT Society.
 

Member-at-Large - Stefano Galli

Stefano Galli received his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering from the University of Rome ``La Sapienza’’ (Italy) in 1994 and 1998, respectively. Currently, he is the Director of Technology Strategy at ASSIA where he leads the overall standardization strategy of the company and contributes to the company's efforts in the area of wired/wireless access and home area networking. Prior to this position, he was in Panasonic Corporation from 2006 to 2010 as Lead Scientist in the Strategic R&D Planning Office and then as the Director of Energy Solutions R&D. From 1998 to 2006, he was a Senior Scientist in Bellcore (now Telcordia Technologies).

Dr. Galli is serving as elected Member-at-Large of the IEEE Communications Society (ComSoc) Board of Governors and is involved in a variety of capacities in Power Line Communications (PLC) and Smart Grid activities. He currently serves as: Chair of the ITU-T G.hnem (Narrowband PLC for Smart Grid) and G.wnb (Wireless Narrowband) projects, Chair of the PAP 15 Coexistence subgroup instituted by the US National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), Chair of the IEEE ComSoc Ad-Hoc Committee on Smart Grid Communications, Member of the Energy and Policy Committee of IEEE-USA, and Editor for the IEEE Transactions on Smart Grid and the IEEE Transactions on Communications (Wireline Systems and Smart Grid Communications). He is also the founder and first Chair of the IEEE ComSoc Technical Committee on Power Line Communications (2004-2010), and the past Co-Chair of the ``Communications Technology'' Task Force of the IEEE P2030 Smart Grid Interoperability Standard (2009-2010).

Dr. Galli has worked on a variety of wireless and wired communications technologies, is an IEEE Senior Member, holds fifteen issued and pending patents, has published over 90 peer-reviewed papers, has co-authored two book chapters, and has made numerous standards contributions to IEEE and ITU-T.

He has received the 2010 IEEE ISPLC Best Paper Award, and the 2011 IEEE ComSoc Outstanding Service Award from the IEEE ComSoc Technical Committee on Power Line Communications.
 

Member-at-Large - Bob Shapiro

Robert C. Shapiro, P.E. has a BSEE from Texas Tech and an MBA with honors from the University of Dallas.  He is the Senior Manager, Systems Engineering, EADS. He serves on TIA TR.8 standards committees and is on multiple Land Mobile Radio industry committees where he has written numerous articles and is a frequent speaker.

Robert started his ComSoc volunteer activities in Dallas as the Membership Chair, Treasurer, Chair, and Past Chair of ComSoc and the IEEE Dallas Section. He has served ComSoc as the North American Director, DLT Coordinator, and Director of Marketing & Industry Relations from 2002 to 2009.

He is currently the IEEE Region 5 South Area Chair. He serves ComSoc as the Editor-in-Chief of the e-News and he is on the Awards Committee. He is the Expo Chair for the 2011 GLOBECOM conference in Houston and the Finance Chair of the 2010 RFID Conference.
 

Member-at-Large - Moe Win

Moe Win is an Associate Professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Prior to joining MIT in 2002, he was at AT&T Research Laboratories for five years and at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory for seven years. He has published extensively in the area of wireless communication systems and networks.

Professor Win has played an active leadership role in ComSoc for more than a dozen years as Chair (2004-2006) and Secretary (2002-2004) for ComSoc’s Radio Communications Committee (RCC); Technical Program Chair for WCNC’09, ICUWB’06, UWBST’02, and Communication Theory Symposia of ICC’04 and GLOBECOM’00; Technical Program Vice-Chair for ICC-2002; and Tutorial Chair for ICC’09. He is currently an Editor for the IEEE Transaction on Wireless Communications. He served as Area Editor (2003-2006) and Editor (1998-2006) for the IEEE Transactions on Communications and Guest-Editor for the Proceedings of the IEEE (2009) and the IEEE Journal on Selected Areas in Communications (2002).

Professor Win is an IEEE Fellow (2004) and a ComSoc Distinguished Lecturer (2006-2009). He received the IEEE ComSoc Marconi Best Paper Award (2008); IEEE ComSoc RCC Technical Recognition Award (2008); Laurea Honoris Causa from the University of Ferrara (2008); Wireless Educator of the Year Award (2007); the IEEE Sumner Award (2006); Fulbright Fellowship (2004); U.S. Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (2004); and IEEE AP-S Schelkunoff Transactions Prize Paper Award (2003).

Member-at-Large - Merrily Hartmann

Merrily Hartmann retired from SBC Communications/AT&T in 2000 with 25 years of service.  Her tenure with the company included positions with increasing responsibility in the areas of equipment engineering, network planning, long range technical planning, network mechanization, network sales support, corporate human resources, and global markets sales support.  She started her career with Bell Telephone Laboratories (Indian Hill Laboratory, Naperville, Illinois).  She currently is serving her second term as ComSoc’s Director of Conference Operations and as a member of the IEEE Conference Publications Committee.  She has also served on the GIMS Committee (2006-2007), which is responsible for providing strategic guidance and management oversight of the Society’s flagship conferences ICC and GLOBECOM.  She has served on numerous conference organizing committees:  NTC 1982; IEEE GLOBECOM 1986, 1989, 1993, 2001, and 2004; and IEEE RFID 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, and 2011. She received her B.S. degree in mathematics and computer sciences from the University of Illinois, Chicago.

Member-at-Large - Angel Lozano

Angel Lozano is a Professor at UPF in Barcelona, Spain. He received his Ph.D. from Stanford University in 1998. Between 1996 and 1998, he worked for Rockwell Semiconductor Systems (now Conexant Systems). Between 1999 and 2008 he was with Bell Labs. Between 2005 and 2008 he was also an adjunct associate professor at Columbia University. He served as Associate Editor for IEEE Transactions on Communications between 1999 and 2009, has guest edited special issues and participated in conference organization committees, and is Vice-Chair of ComSoc’s Communication Theory Technical Committee. He has participated in standardization activities for 3GPP, 3GPP2 and IEEE 802.20. Prof. Lozano has authored over 85 papers and one monograph, holds 15 patents, and has contributed to several books. His papers have received two awards: best paper at ISSSTA 2006, and the Stephen O. Rice prize to the best paper published in IEEE Transactions on Communications in 2008.

Member-at-Large - John S. Thompson

John S. Thompson received his Ph.D. degree from the University of Edinburgh in 1996. Since October 2005, he has held the position of reader (equivalent to associate professor in the United States) at the University of Edinburgh. His research interests are in wireless communications systems, and he has published over 200 papers, many in major IEEE conferences and journals. He has worked extensively within ComSoc conferences, acting as TPC Co-Chair for ICC 2007 held in Glasgow, United Kingdom, and in the same capacity for GLOBECOM 2010 held in Miami, Florida. He has been a member of the GITC committee that oversees the technical content of ICC/GLOBECOM conferences since 2008 and currently serves as its vice-chair. He was also a Wireless Communication Track co-chair for IEEE CHINACOM 2010. He is currently a member-at-large of the IEEE ComSoc Education Committee.

Member-at-Large - Chengshan Xiao

Chengshan Xiao received his B.S. degree in 1987 from UESTC, Chengdu, China, M.S. Degree in 1989 from Tsinghua University, Beijing, China, and Ph.D. degree in 1997 from the University of Sydney, Australia. He was a senior engineer with Nortel Networks, Ottawa, Canada, and he is now a full professor with the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Missouri University of Science and Technology. He is currently Editor-in-Chief of IEEE Transactions on Wireless Communications. He served as Technical Program Chair for ICC 2010 at Cape Town, South Africa, and is founding Chair of the IEEE Wireless Communications Technical Committee (2007-2008). He has also served in many other positions for ComSoc’s journals, technical committees, and conferences. He is a Fellow of the IEEE and a Distinguished Lecturer of ComSoc.

Member-at-Large - Stefano Bregni

Stefano Bregni is Associate Professor at Politecnico di Milano, where he teaches telecommunications networks. He was born in Milano, Italy, in 1965 and he graduated in telecommunications engineering in 1990. After 9 years in industry, he joined Politecnico di Milano as tenured Assistant Professor in 1999.

He has been Senior Member of the IEEE since 1999. Since 2004, he has been Distinguished Lecturer of the IEEE Communications Society, where he holds the following positions: Member at Large on the Board of Governors (2010-12), Director of Education (2008-10), Chair of the Transmission, Access and Optical Systems (TAOS) Technical Committee and Member at Large of the Globecom/ICC Technical Content (GITC) committee. He is or has been Symposia Chair of GLOBECOM 2009, Technical Program Vice-Chair of GLOBECOM 2012 and Symposium Chair in eight other ICC/GLOBECOM conferences. He was also TPC Vice-Chair of the IEEE Optical Network Design and Modelling 2005 conference (ONDM 2005). He is Editor of the IEEE ComSoc Global Communications Newsletter and Associate Editor of the IEEE Communications Surveys and Tutorials Journal. He was tutorial lecturer in 4 ICC and GLOBECOM conferences. He served on ETSI and ITU-T committees on digital network synchronization.

He is author or co-author of about 70 papers, mostly in IEEE conferences and journals, and of the books Synchronization of Digital Telecommunications Networks (Chichester, UK: John Wiley & Sons, 2002; translated and published in Russian by MIR Publishers, Moskow, 2003) and Sistemi di trasmissione PDH e SDH - Multiplazione (PDH and SDH Transmission Systems Multiplexing. Milano, Italy: McGraw-Hill, 2004). His current research interests focus mainly on traffic modelling and optical networks.
 

Member-at-Large - Hans-Martin Foisel

Hans-Martin Foisel joined Deutsche Telekom in 1998. He is currently Head of Hybrid Network Technology Department at Deutsche Telekom Technique. His main activities at Deutsche Telekom comprise flexible, control plane enabled networks, their architectures, functions, standardization and interoperability aspects as well as optical access network technologies.
In the standardization area, he currently serves as Chair of Carrier Working Group and BoD member of the Optical Internetworking Forum (OIF, www.oiforum.com). He joined the OIF in 1998, being active mainly in the Networking Working Groups and is chairing since 2002 the Carrier Working Group.
Prior joining Deutsche Telekom, he has worked at Fraunhofer Heinrich-Hertz-Institute in Berlin for 19 years in the field of optical transmission systems research. He holds diploma of Electrical Engineering from the University Kassel and the Technical University Berlin, Germany.
 

Member-at-Large - David Michelson

David G. Michelson received his PhD in Electrical Engineering from the University of British Columbia in 1994. After serving as a member of a joint research team at AT&T Wireless Services and AT&T Labs - Research that developed the propagation and channel models upon which the development of WiMAX and LTE were ultimately based, he founded UBC’s Radio Science Laboratory where his research focuses on propagation modeling and antenna design for wide area, vehicular, industrial and satellite communications. He currently serves on the Board of Directors of Wavefront, Canada's National Centre of Excellence for the Commercialization of Wireless Technology, and as Chair of IEEE Canada's Industry Relations Committee.
Prof. Michelson has previously served ComSoc as Chair, Vancouver Chapter (1999-2007), North American Chapter Chairs Coordinator (2006-2007), Member, North American Region Board (2006-2007), Member, Membership Programs Development Board (2006-2007), Member, North American Membership Development Committee (2001-2002) and Coordinator, Distinguished Lecture Tours (2001-2002). In 2009, in recognition of his service to IEEE Vancouver Section and IEEE ComSoc, he received IEEE Canada's EF Glass Award. Under his leadership as Section Chair, IEEE Vancouver Section was recognized as IEEE's Outstanding Large Section in 2010.

 

Division III Director - Doug Zuckerman
 

An active IEEE member for 48 years, Dr. Zuckerman is currently the IEEE Division III Director-Elect, was 2008-2009 President of the IEEE Communications Society, and previously held all four Vice President and other officer positions on the Society’s Board of Governors. He received his B.S., M.S. and Eng.Sc.D degrees from Columbia University and is an IEEE Fellow. His professional experience, mainly at Bell Labs and Telcordia Technologies, USA, spans the operations, management and engineering of emerging networks and services. His work heavily influenced early standards for management of telecommunications networks. Presently semi-retired, he is still active in standards as Telcordia’s representative to the Optical Internetworking Forum. Much of his professional life has been dedicated to IEEE activities. His service resulted in the following honors: IEEE Third Millennium Medal, the Communications Society’s McLellan Award for meritorious service, its Conference Achievement Award, and the Salah Aidarous Memorial Award.

 

Division III Director Elect - Harvey Freeman
 

Dr. Freeman is President of HAF Consulting, a Minnesota-based technology consulting and project management company. With over thirty-five years of experience in the communications field, Harvey specializes in designing/managing innovative technology-based solutions. He received his B.S.E.E. degree from University of Pennsylvania and Ph.D. in electrical engineering from University of Illinois. In his work life, he has founded and ran two companies, handling all of the finances for each. For the past 10 years he has been managing technical projects and achieving a remarkable record of on-time completions and within budget constraints.
Harvey is a long-term, enthusiastic volunteer in the Communications Society. He has had eighth terms on the Board of Governors, Treasurer for six years, Chief Information Officer, Vice President of Membership Services, and Vice President of Technical Activities. His numerous contributions to the technical growth of and membership advancement in ComSoc include first Editor-in-Chief/founder/of the highly regarded IEEE Network Magazine, founder/first General Chair and current Standing Committee Chair of IEEE INFOCOM, and founder of IEEE SECON, ComSoc’s Conference on Sensor and Ad Hoc Communications and Networks, He served on the Meetings & Conferences Board, Strategic Planning Committee, Awards Committee, Staff & Facilities Committee, and Nominations Committee. Currently he is IEEE Division III Director-Elect representing ComSoc. In 2001, he was honored with ComSoc’s Meetings & Conferences Exemplary Service Award. In 2004, he received the Society’s Donald W. McLellan Meritorious Service Award.
