Whilst the increase in the telecom market in Africa has increased 'astronomically', exceeding that of Asia, Europe and USA, it is observed that mobile phones outnumber fixed lines by 10 and the broadband uptake is the lowest in the world. The 'digital divide' still needs to be crossed in many rural communities. What is the most appropriate technology, policy and funding model for accelerating the rollout of broadband access and networks in developing countries?
This panel will explore the different international approaches to broadband rollouts. References will be made to policies in the USA and European countries. Lessons for developing countries will then be discussed with regards to best practices for technology, policy and finding models.
