Modulation, Coding and Signal Processing for Wireless Communications

Background

The goal of this Special Issue is to focus on recent developments of research in the physical layer of wireless communications, with special emphasis on 4G Wireless Communications Systems. The interest of the scientific and technical community for this topic, which is expected to have an increasing impact in the near future, is well documented by a number of editorial initiatives in recent Scientific Journals. When one considers all this activity in the communication theory of wireless systems, and, in addition, the preponderance of wireless communications articles that appear in regular issues of communications journals, it is clear that there is a need for a collection of seminal papers that are written from a perspective of being tutorial and that, in addition, provide insight into existing and new developments in the wireless communications field. Thus, the purpose of this Special Issue of the IEEE Wireless Communications Magazine is to elucidate through tutorial articles, with insight, focus and suggestions for future direction, the techniques for the wireless physical layer that are noteworthy and will provide the backbone of present and future development of 4G Wireless Communication Systems.

Scope of contributions
We solicit focussed tutorial articles that are survey contributions or original research papers that treat the following subject areas:

The topics above represent the areas that cover most of the recent key developments in Wireless Communications Systems. Whereas 3G communications was limited to a few hundred kilobits per second, the goal in 4G systems is that performance should be close to information-theoretic bounds. Very high data rates are planned and to attain this goal the topics listed above are key concepts that lay the foundation to attain truly high data rate wireless communication systems.

Schedule for submissions
Submission Deadline: May 1, 2004
Notification of Acceptance or Rejection: October 1, 2004
Final Manuscript Due: November 15, 2004
Publication Date : February 1, 2005.

Submission of manuscripts Submitted articles should be tutorial in nature and provide insight into recent developments in the Wireless Physical Layer. All submissions will be reviewed by people working in the wireless communications area. Articles can contain some mathematics but should not be densely represented in mathematical form. Block diagrams, and diagrams in general, are encouraged to illustrate key aspects of the article development. Each article should be on the order of 4500 words or less. This does not include figures and tables which in number should be jointly kept to no more that 6 or 7 entities. Guidelines of this nature can be found at http://www.comsoc.org/pubs/pcm/sub_guidelines.html. Please send articles in pdf (preferred) or PostScript format to mclane@ee.queensu.ca no later than May 1, 2004.
