Candidate's Statement
My goal is to increase ComSoc values to its constituents, both in industry and academia. ComSoc should be a relevant part of its members’ professional lives. Besides supporting the continuity of ComSoc as the main source of technical information for members, I will support initiatives to increase the diversity of high quality services such as professional certification, on-line tutorial and training, standards activities and virtual communities.
If elected I will work to:
- Create channels to motivate members to increase their participation in the Society
- Create free and low-cost continuing education products, such as on-line tutorials and web-based seminars
- Team with local Chapters and Sister Societies to increase the benefit of local organizations
- Broaden standards activities to enhance our relevance to and support from industry
- Address worldwide differences in professional needs and economic situations, including overcoming financial barriers
- Ensure that ComSoc continues disseminating the highest quality technical information
- Encourage on-line communities, interest groups, and seminars
- Create professional certification programs
Biography
Nelson Fonseca obtained his Ph.D. in Computer Engineering from University of Southern California, 1994. He is currently Associate Professor at State University of Campinas, Brazil. He has published 150+ refereed papers and supervised 30+ graduate students.
Nelson was Director of On-Line Services on the Board of Governors (2002-03). He is Chair of Multimedia Communications TC, TC Cluster Chair of Vertical Communication Issues, and past Chair of Communications Systems Integration & Modeling TC. Nelson is EIC of IEEE Communications Surveys & Tutorials, and on the editorial boards of IEEE Communications Magazines, Computer Network Journal and IEEE Transactions on Multimedia. He served as EIC of IEEE Communications Society Electronic Newsletter, as Editor of “Global Communications Newsletter” and Associate EIC of IEEE Communications Surveys & Tutorials. Nelson co-chaired over 10 ComSoc symposia/workshops, specially the ICC/GLOBECOM Symposium on Communications Quality, Reliability & Performance Modeling and Multimedia Services.
