Introduction

The Technical Committee on High Speed Networks (TCHSN), formerly known as the Technical Committee on Gigabit Networks (TGGN), is one of the first Technical Committees (TCs) established by IEEE Communications Society (ComSoc).  The TCHSN technical activities deal with various important issues relating to telecommunications networks, both wireline and wireless.  Recently, the TCHSN has worked closely with the sister Optical Neworks Technical Committee (ONTC).

Overall, the major technical activities of the TCHSN are mainly concentrated on networking-layer issues and include (but are not limited to) the following:

  • Innovative “clean-slate” network architectures for next generation ultra-high speed networks
  • Switching technologies including packet, burst and circuit switching
  • Ultra high-speed transport protocols
  • Novel approaches and strategies for highly secure ultra-high speed networks, protocols and systems
  • Dynamic provisioning in ultra high-speed optical networks
  • Optical network control and signaling plane technologies (GMPLS, UNI, NNI, etc.)
  • Application optimized network middleware
  • Novel protocols and mechanisms for large-volume data transfers over long distances
  • Ultra-high speed wireless networks and protocols

The TCHSN is actively involved with the organization and endorsement of various technical conferences/symposia/workshops in the areas.  The TCHSN welcomes new membership and is further seeking to expand its collaborations and activities with other IEEE TCs.  In addition, it also welcomes any recommendations for various ComSoc awards. Individuals who are interested making such recommendations are requested to contact the officers of the TCSHN (whose information is given in “Officers” of this website).

The TCHSN also works to recommend deserving members to be elevated into IEEE senior member and IEEE Fellow levels.  In addition, the TCHSN is committed to promote and participate various IEEE standard activities. For more information on various IEEE Standard Working Groups, please refer to the “IEEE Standard Activities” in this website.
