Take this one day online course to understand basic wireless principles. Taught from a non-technical perspective for anyone to appreciate, the course starts with a brief look at how wireless has developed from ancient times to today and goes on to define radio, spectrum and mobility terms. The electromagnetic spectrum, propagation and antennas are introduced along with modulation and access methods. Wireless systems are addressed giving you a look at protocols and layers, wireless networks and design features.
By the end of this course you will be able to identify the difference between:
- wireless and fixed networks
- macro-cells, micro-cells, pico-cells and femto-cells
- packet switching vs. circuit switching
- cellular network generations [1G; 2G (GSM and FDMA/TDMA); 2.5G (GPRS); 3G (UMTS; CDMA); 3.5G (HSPDA; HSPA+); almost 4G (LTE; OFDMA); 4G (LTE advanced)]
- the common short-range wireless technologies
You will also understand the systems, protocols and mechanisms needed to support mobility in communications. Wireless Standards are introduced along with the types of telecommunications networks: cellular, vehicular, sensor, RFID, satellite and others. Services, applications and devices including smartphones and other wireless communication devices are explored.

Who Should Attend
This is an introductory level 1-day course for individuals interested in an overview of wireless telecommunications. A basic understanding of RF and wireless fundamentals is useful but not mandatory. In addition, it is assumed that students are knowledgeable of information technology in general, and possess some basic familiarity with telecommunications, computing platforms, mobile devices and networking.
This course may be used as introductory training for students pursuing IEEE’s WCET professional certification.
It is also ideal for anyone selling wireless products and services who wants a more firm grasp on what the technology in the products they are selling is, the fundamentals of what it can do and what wireless communications professionals on the engineering front are working on developing for future applications.
Lee VishloffPEng, IEEE WCP
Mr. Vishloff is the principal engineer in a wireless consultancy focused on cellular-based M2M solutions and short-range wireless products. He has over 30 years of experience in wireless systems and product design. During his career he has designed a wide range of wireless products including satellite systems, terrestrial radio systems, rural communications, aeronautical and others. Lee brings a wide range of practical experience with hands-on and management experience in wireless telecommunication systems, modem, RF, analog, digital, embedded firmware and mechanical design technologies. He has spent the majority of his career working with equipment manufacturers with stints in the semiconductor and consulting businesses. He has served on numerous joint industry-academic committees during his career, strengthening the link between academic research and practical industry needs. Lee has a degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of British Columbia and completed his management education at Simon Fraser University and the AEA/Stanford Executive Institute.
