Course Description

This course provides an end-to-end understanding of Network Function Virtualization (NFV) and Software-Defined Networking (SDN), and the end to end aspects and road to 5G. The building blocks and roadmap for an increasingly user-centric and on-demand dynamic delivery, business-aware operation and service-oriented architecture are outlined. The vision, requirements, key enabling technologies and architectural considerations for 5G are discussed, along with transformations and new possibilities, challenges and realities, and timeline.

In this end-to-end context, role and functions of NFV, SDN, Cloud and Edge Computing, Slicing, Multi-Domain Orchestration, Open Source, Analytics, and Densification roadmap are detailed, as they enable agility, modularity, flexibility, sustainability, programmability and efficiency. Network and business transition and transformation requirements, considerations and challenges are discussed in how they provide a service-oriented and business-agile environment, offering network on-demand and anything-as-a-service (XaaS), for a wide range of use cases and requirements, including enhanced mobile and immersive broadband and human-machine interaction with critical / low latency and massive Internet of Things (IoT).

Javan Erfanian

IEEE Communications Society Distinguished Lecturer, IEEE WCP

Javan Erfanian has been an IEEE Communications Society Distinguished Lecturer for years, an editor and author for the Wireless Engineering Book of Knowledge, and a member of IEEE WCET (Wireless Communications Engineering Technologies) Industry Advisory Board. He has about 20 years of experience in telecommunications research, lectures, and practice. He has taught many academic and industry courses and programs, particularly on Communications and Wireless Systems. In his IEEE involvement, Javan was also Chair of Communications Society in Toronto, and the Canadian correspondent for Communications Magazine in late 90s. He received the IEEE Millennium Medal in 2000. His earlier publications are cited in research journals and textbooks. Javan has extensive experience in wireless industry. His recent contributions to research forums & standards bodies have focused on future wireless technologies from service environment and user interaction to next-generations of technologies, networks and operational excellence.

Learning Objectives

  • Have an end-to-end understanding of the role of software- and cloud-based functions, networks, and service delivery, virtualized networks, slicing, and “Anything-As-A-Service”.
  • Understand the need and approach for operational efficiency, scalability and flexibility, multi-tenancy, agility and programmable innovations and upgrades.
  • Understand the end-to-end road to 5G use cases, requirements, technologies, architectural considerations, and timeline; and the central role of cloud- and NFV/SDN-based networks and delivery, slicing, edge computing, and ultra-dense network architecture and roadmap.

Each registered participant receives a copy of instructor slides and access to the recording of the course for 15 business days after the live lecture. Earn 0.6 IEEE Continuing Education Untis for participating.
