    Course Description

    This half-day course provides an understanding of self-organizing networks and automation roadmap, and the end-to-end road to 5G. In this context, the self-organizing network (SON) mechanisms are introduced and their roles and roadmap towards and in the next-generation architecture are outlined. A characterization of 5G and positioning for the needs of the next decade is provided, along with details on enabling technologies such as virtualization, softwariziation, cloudification, orchestration, network densification, new radio and next-generation network architecture, mmWave, analytics, automation, and others. This includes a discussion on technologies, roadmap, how they fit together, and how they provide an end-to-end intelligent, flexible, efficient, dynamic and autonomous enabling environment. Furthermore, requirements and design principles, challenges, gaps and realities, global initiatives and standardization, are outlined.

    Javan Erfanian

    IEEE Communications Society Distinguished Lecturer, IEEE WCP

    Javan Erfanian has been an IEEE Communications Society Distinguished Lecturer for years, an editor and author for the Wireless Engineering Book of Knowledge, and a member of IEEE WCET (Wireless Communications Engineering Technologies) Industry Advisory Board. He has about 20 years of experience in telecommunications research, lectures, and practice. He has taught many academic and industry courses and programs, particularly on Communications and Wireless Systems. In his IEEE involvement, Javan was also Chair of Communications Society in Toronto, and the Canadian correspondent for Communications Magazine in late 90s. He received the IEEE Millennium Medal in 2000. His earlier publications are cited in research journals and textbooks. Javan has extensive experience in wireless industry. His recent contributions to research forums & standards bodies have focused on future wireless technologies from service environment and user interaction to next-generations of technologies, networks and operational excellence.

    Learning Objectives

    • Get an appreciation for the end-to-end picture of network evolution &  roadmap, key components and enablers, how each works, and how they fit together

    Course Content

    Consistent with the description indicated, the course outline will particularly include:

    • Motivations and drivers for change, market and user demands, economic sustainability, opportunities and paradigm changes, cost of ownership and time to market challenges – cost, energy and time-to-market efficiency
    • Understanding Self-Organizing Networks mechanisms, their characterization and standards, and their evolution towards the future self-organizing, autonomous, sustainable, energy-efficient, and smart architecture, operation, unified orchestration and management, and service delivery.
    • 5G vision, characterization, use cases, requirements, design principles
    • IoT and Verticals requirements; low-latency and use cases with extreme requirements; augmented and virtual reality; anything-as-a-service
    • Service oriented architecture, network slice, and slice on demand, NFV/SDN-based and cloudified 5G and role of full flexibility, scalability, big data and automation
    • End-to-end technology enablers from softwarization and virtualization to ultra-dense networks, mmWave and other bands, C-RAN, massive MIMO, new radio, and edge computing and delivery
    • 5G initiatives, timelines and standardization; 2017-2020+, realities & roadmap

    Each registered participant receives a copy of instructor slides and access to the recording of the course for 15 business days after the live lecture. Earn 0.3 IEEE Continuing Education Units for participating.
