Systems design and engineering is the first crucial step in building out a network infrastructure capable of transporting communication services in a  reliable, cost effective, and scalable manner. Successful integration of technology and protocols inter-working on multiple layers is a key part to understanding network design and operation. This session will focus on two case studies, each presenting a unique set of requirements and corresponding solutions for future networks planned here in the province of BC.

Case Study One highlights the requirements and corresponding solution for a provincial network spanning the Lower Mainland, Victoria, Prince George, and Vernon. The solution transports both voice and data services over an ATM WAN. Multi-layer switches at every site combine IEEE 802.3, 802.1w, 802.1s, and 802.3ad for reliable Ethernet layer connectivity and control. IP layer routing using OSPFv2 is also integrated to enable fast and efficient recovery in the event of a Network Operations Center disaster.

Case Study Two presents a network solution spanning the lower mainland. Voice, video and data services are transported over two optical rings, using SONET as the underlying transport protocol. IEEE 802.3 and 802.3ad are used to provide high-throughput and reliable Ethernet connectivity. OSPFv2 routing features including hierarchical design, quick convergence, and ECMP load balancing are leveraged for effective and reliable IP Layer 3 connectivity.
