AbstractThere is building global demand for affordable, broadband interactive services and satellite-based systems are capable of fulfilling this demand. Successful deployment of satellite broadband systems depends on a universal consumer terminal from multiple sources being available. Consumers are ready for satellite technology as shown by the dramatic success of DBS entertainment systems.
The current approach to providing interactive satellite services has been to utilize complex Very Small Aperture Terminal (VSAT) systems. Traditional VSAT systems employ numerous proprietary technologies and specialized components in their construction. This approach has resulted in a "black box" that costs in the thousands of dollars. This is much more than the majority of potential new users is prepared to pay.
In order to realize the full potential of satellite-based, broadband delivery systems, the cost and complexity of terminals must be reduced to an affordable price range, initially targeted at less than $1,000. This magnitude of cost reduction can only be accomplished through the development of a new generation "open" terminal.
