The newly formed Joint Communications
Chapter represents the IEEE Communications Society, IEEE Vehicular
Technology Society, and IEEE Antennas and Propagation Society in Vancouver.
As such, our areas of interest have expanded to include virtually all aspects
of communications and land transportation.
Formation of a joint chapter is especially timely given
that Vancouver will be hosting the IEEE Vehicular Technology Conference
(Fall) in September 2002. (The world's premier conference for those
active in the area of Mobile and Personal Communications, IEEE VTC is now
held twice per year in order to accomodate the huge demand for opportunities
to exchange information in this area.)
One of the many advantages of forming a joint chapter
is that we can now draw from the resources of three societies. Of
particular interest are increased opportunities to host speakers from the
IEEE Distinguished Lecturer Program and opportunities to obtain funding
for special projects.
The Joint Communications Chapter pursues
the goals of our parent societies at the local level by:
-
Hosting monthly presentations by local
and visiting experts on topics of current interest,
-
Organizing tours of local companies, research
labs, and industrial sites, and,
-
Hosting or co-sponsoring half-day or full-day
seminars on topics of current interest.
These events, which are open to all members
of the community, are intended to help one keep up to date on both current
trends in communications technology and the current state of the telecommunications
and vehicular technology industries in British Columbia.
Other important activities include:
-
Recognition of local members through nomination
for advancement in IEEE membership grade and nomination for IEEE technical
and service awards,
-
Arranging for industry support of student
projects organized by student branches and chapters,
-
Arranging for local support of Vancouver-based
conferences and symposia that are related to the interests of the IEEE
Communications Society, IEEE Vehicular Technology Society, and IEEE Antennas
and Propagation Society , and,
-
Organizing events or activities concerning
either technology or public policy that are oriented towards the general
public.
