TCCC Meeting Minutes - Globecom '97

The TCCC meeting at Globecom '97 in Phoenix, Arizona was held on Wednesday, November 5, 1997 from 5.15 pm until 7 pm at the Hyatt Regency Phoenix. The meeting was chaired by Roch Guerin.

Conference Reports

Ioannis Stavrakakis, the TCCC conference coordinator, presented reports from conference representatives for the following conferences:

Globecom '97

TCCC Conference Representative: Subrata Bannerjee

Total number of papers submitted 732.
Total number of papers accepted ~350 (51 sessions, 7 papers per session).
TCCC requested (bid) to review 188 papers.
TCCC was assigned 56 papers by Globecom TPC.
TCCC reviewers accepted 21 papers.

TCCC sponsored/co-sponsored the following 11 technical sessions.

TCCC members provided excellent reviews, including some very detailed ones, on the 56 papers assigned to TCCC. Electronic reviews (submitted via email or web) have been forwarded to the papers' authors via email. Reviews received via fax were forwarded to those authors whose fax numbers were included on the cover pages of their manuscripts. (Note that Globecom 97 TPC normally don't mail the reviews to the manuscript authors.)

2nd Global Internet Mini-Conference

Henning Schulzrinne reported that about half the papers submitted to GI '97 were accepted. 27 papers were presented over two days. Due to technical difficulties only a part of GI '97 was multicast. The GI '97 mini-conference process was integrated into the Globecom process with papers being submitted to Globecom TPC then assigned to GI '97 mini-conference. After some initial difficulty the process worked well. The technical program was organized by Steve Pink, Matts Bjoerkman and Henning Schulzrinne.

Volunteers to serve on the TPC for Global Internet '98 are solicited. If you are interested please contact Henning Schulzrinne.

Infocom '98

Ian Akyldiz, Technical Chair for Infocom '98, presented a summary of the paper submission and review process. Each paper was reviewed by 3 TPC members and forwarded to 3 Area TPC members. The Area TPC meeting to determine the technical program was held on Oct. 25th. The final tally was:
        Papers submitted: 792
        Papers accepted: 172
        Acceptance Rate: 22%

ICC '98

There were a total of 553 papers that were submitted to ICC '98. The conference plan is to have 50 sessions with 7 papers per session which will results in approximately 350 papers that will make the final program. Information on the number of papers reviewed by TCCC was not known.

Milcom'98

The chair of the unclassified program for Milcom '98. David McElroy, asked for TCCC participation in forming sessions for Milcom '98. Four sessions were proposed in areas ranging from wireless communications to network security.

12th Computer Communications Workshop

Joe Bannister e-mailed the following summary of the 12th Annual Computer Communications Workshop which was held September 8-10, 1997 in Phoenix, Arizona.  There were 51 registered attendees and 31 presentations.  The final budget has not yet been submitted to IEEE Communications Society.

9th LAN/MAN Workshop

Malathi Veerarghavan, technical co-chair of the workshop, presented an updated status of the workshop. The submission deadline is November 20, 1997. The workshop will have five corporate sponsors, Bay Networks, Lucent Technologies, CITO, Newbridge and IBM.
 

IWQoS '98

13th Computer Communications Workshop

Nikhil Jain of Nortel will be the program chair of the 13th Annual Computer Communications Workshop, and John Daigle of the University of Mississippi will be the general chair.  The dates for the workshop have not yet been finalized. John Daigle proposed Oxford, TN as a potential site for the workshop. Oxford is accessible by a 1 hour drive from Memphis. If you have any comments on the choice of a site for the workshop please contact John Daigle.


Other Business

NSF

Tatsuya Suda, NSF program director in Networking and Communications Research and Infrastructure, gave a brief overview on NSF programs. The major focus of next years program will be the NGI initiative. Information on the focus of this initiative can be found at www.ngi.gov and www.cra.org. NSF may have upto $5 million for funding NGI projects. The scope and focus of the NSF program are still being determined.

Tatsuya also added that Congress was asking NSF to document the impact of their programs in order to justify continued funding of NSF programs. He may be asking help from some members to put together a report showing the impact of NSF funds.
