Nelson Fonseca

Nelson Luís Saldanha da Fonseca (Nelson Fonseca) received his Engineer and MSc. Degrees from the Pontificial Catholic University at Rio de Janeiro and the Ph.D. degree from the University of Southern California in 1994. He is a Full Professor at the Institute of Computing, State University of Campinas, Campinas, Brazil. He has also lectured in the University of Trento, University of Pisa and University of Basque Country. He has published 300+ refereed papers and supervised 50+ graduate students.

He received the 2011 ComSoc Latin America Region Distinguished Service Award, the Medal of the Chancellor of the University of Pisa, and the 2001 Elsevier Computer Networks Editor of the Year Award. Currently, Nelson Fonseca is ComSoc Vice President Member Relations. He served as Member-at-Large of ComSoc’s Board of Governors (2009-2011), Director of Latin America Region (2008-2009), Director of On-Line Services (2002-2003), Chair of the Communications Systems Integration and Modeling Technical Committee (2005-2007) and Chair of the Multimedia Communications Technical Committee (2006-2007).

Nelson Fonseca was EiC of Communications Surveys & Tutorials (2007-2011), EiC of ComSoc Electronic Newsletter (2004-2007) and Editor of the Global Communications Newsletter (1999-2002). He is Senior Technical Editor for the IEEE Communications Magazine and Senior Editor for IEEE Communications Surveys & Tutorials. He is on the editorial board of Computer Networks, Peer-to-Peer Networking &Applications, Journal of Internet Services & Applications, and the International Journal of Communication Systems. He also served as a member of the editorial board of the IEEE Transactions on Multimedia.

Nelson Fonseca chaired over 15 conferences and founded the conferences IEEE LATINCOM, IEEE LATINCLOUD as well as the series of Multimedia Communications Symposia in GLOBECOM/ICC.
