Course Description

The 4-Day Intensive Wireless Communications Course is a popular resource used by many candidates to prepare for the IEEE WCET Certification Exam.  This course covers all seven areas of expertise addressed in the WCET Certification Exam.  Included with the course is a copy of the Wireless Engineering Body of Knowledge (WEBOK), 2nd Edition, another essential resource for your exam preparations. This combination package includes a seat in the September 2019 4-Day Intensive Wireless Communications course and a seat in the WCET Fall 2019 Testing Window.  Please be sure to read course cancellation policy below before registering.

This 20-hour course meets for five hours each day over four days. It gives an in-depth review of chosen topics from the major communication areas comprising

The Final 2019 IEEE WCET Certification Testing Window runs from 23 September to 19 October 2019.  Applications for this testing window must be submitted by 6 September 2019 by 23:59 p.m. UTC. 

This combination package is only good for the Septembper 2019 Intensive Wireless Communications course and Fall 2019 IEEE WCET Testing Window.   Registration for this combination package closes at 5pm EDT on Wednesday, 4 September 2019.  Once you have registered for this course, you will receive an email from ComSoc within 1-2 business days with instructions on how to apply for the IEEE WCET exam.

Who Should Attend

This combination package is meant for those who are looking for a resource to help them prepare for the IEEE WCET Certification Exam in the Fall 2019 Testing Window (this is the FINAL testing window of 2019). 

The purpose of the course is to provide a comprehensive and up-to-date review of wireless communication for engineering professionals, instructors and students. The course covers wireless transmission and reception principles, electromagnetic propagation, antenna characteristics, and wireless network access methods.  Cellular wireless interfaces and core networks from second generation GSM and CDMA through LTE and 5G New Radio are covered in detail. Other wireless systems and networks, among them Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and Zigbee, as well as satellite communication, are also part of the syllabus.

A well-rounded wireless engineering professional needs to know non-wireless aspects of network communication, and accordingly this course teaches the basics of internet protocol, network and service architectures, and also communications security and techniques for achieving location awareness. Features of communication infrastructure and engineering documentation are included in the curriculum along with the emerging technologies of IoT and vehicle communication. Practice questions with answers and discussion are provided throughout the course to monitor understanding of the material covered.

Learning Objectives

Take this course to:

  • Review fundamentals of wireless communication engineering
  • Understand radio wave propagation and antenna characteristics
  • Review wireless network access technologies and generations of cellular network standards
  • Become familiar with non-cellular wireless networks, wireless area networks and satellite communication
  • Learn network and service architectures including internet protocol routing, mobile IP and teletraffic analysis, IMS
  • Learn features of network management, including monitoring tools and security
  • Get the basics of communications infrastructure including design considerations regarding electrical transients, antenna towers and signal distribution.
  • Become up-to-date on emerging technologies and services including 5G New Radio, MIMO, IoT, the latest Wi-Fi and Bluetooth specs, positioning and location.

Course Materials

Each individual who registers for this course will receive the following:

  • A copy of instructor slides (PDF) sent via email
  • A copy of the Guide to the Wireless Engineering Body of Knowledge (WEBOK), 2nd edition published by John Wiley & Sons. The WEBOK will be mailed to the address specified in your order to arrive the day before the course begins for those who register before 2 September; the WEBOK will be sent out 24-48 business hours after your order is received. It may take another 3-5 days to reach you.
  • Access to the streaming video recording of the course for 15 business days immediately following the course.
  • A certificate of participation.  An optional IEEE CEU Certificate is available for participants who complete the online course evaluation within 2 weeks of the course date.

Course Cancellation and Refund Policy: Requests for online course cancellations must be received 3 business days prior to the course date for a partial refund of the course portion of the registration fee if course materials have not yet been sent to the participant. Once course materials have been shipped to a participant, only a 50% refund can be issued for the course portion of the registration fee if requested 3 business days prior to the course date.  Requests for online course cancellations received less than 3 business days prior to the course cannot be accommodated.  IEEE WCET application fees included in the combination package price (US$450 for ComSoc & IEEE members / US$550 for non-members) cannot be refunded.
