The 2nd IEEE ComSoc 5G Virtual School has been prepared to help the ComSoc community, students, and industry professionals learn the topics connected to the upcoming mobile networking standard, 5G. Whether you are a student, professional or simply interested in the subject, this offering will enable you to learn more about the relevant technologies and solutions that are included in the world of 5G, delivered by the top international experts in the field.
The 2nd IEEE ComSoc 5G Virtual School is completely online, much of what you can complete at your own pace. Included with this offering is the live IEEE ComSoc Training course “5G/NR Non-Standalone Deployment: Implementation, Performance and Challenges” which will be delivered online via WebEx on 24 June 2020 by industry expert Padelis Balis.

5G/NR Non-Standalone Deployment: Implementation, Performance and Challenges Course Description:
The Non-Standalone deployment of 5G/NR is currently one of the highest priorities of advanced Mobile Network Operators. Driven by the fierce competition, Engineering and R&D staff from both operators and vendors, not only need to assimilate the technical depth of the 5G/NR technology but are also required to ensure the tight and cost-efficient interworking of this technology with the legacy LTE infrastructure.
The goal of this course is to provide you with a thorough understanding of the fundamentals of 5G/NR, in the context of the 3GPP Non-Standalone deployment option 3. At first, the architecture, the air interface, and the 3GPP deployment options of 5G/NR are presented. Then the interworking of NR with LTE as an anchor technology is explained, focusing on radio functionality, bearer handling, mobility and performance. Two case studies will be presented to further illustrate applications of this technology. Finally, proposals for spectrum sharing between LTE and 5G/NR will be discussed.
Who Should Attend
The virtual school would be of interest to anyone with general wireless experience seeking to gain an overall picture of the 5G landscape. The live course on 24 June was originally created for radio network engineers holding technical positions up to principal engineer or mid-level technical manager, as well as for academic staff involved in research and teaching in course-related topic areas. This live course should also be interesting for mobile network operators, mobile network infrastructure vendors and universities.

Intermediate level of instruction. Overview level knowledge of LTE and 5G/NR radio access technologies is required for the live course on 24 June.

For the 5G/NR Non-Standalone Deployment course on 24 June, a copy of the instructor's PowerPoint slides will be emailed to registered participants 1 business day in advance of the course date. WebEx invitation for the live course session on 24 June will be emailed to participants 1 business day in advance of the course date. Access to the streaming video recording of this live course is provided for 20 business days after the course has been taught. 0.6 IEEE Continuing Education Units are available for this live course upon completion of the post-course evaluation.
No other hard or soft copies of materials are provided with this package.

CEUs / Certificate
All who register for this school will receive a Certificate of Participation for the 2nd IEEE ComSoc 5G Virtual School by the end of June in their email.
Optional 0.6 IEEE CEUs will be available for the ComSoc Training course, 5G/NR Non-Standalone Deployment course, which will be taking place live, online on 24 June. IEEE CEUs are included with this course but in order to qualify for the CEUs, the participant needs to complete all of the fields in the evaluation form provided after the live course session.
