Course Description

MIMO is a key technology for achieving a vast increase of wireless communication capacity over a finite electromagnetic spectrum. It uses arrays of multiple antennas on one or both ends of a wireless communication link to enhance signal to noise ratio, combat fading, or create multiple communication paths in order to significantly boost channel capacity. This course will review the theoretical basis of MIMO and will show the necessary conditions and limitations that affect its use. It will also explain the application of MIMO in Wi-Fi and 4G cellular (LTE). In addition, the course will explain multi-user MIMO which accommodates greater throughputs on bands below 6 GHz, and massive MIMO, which will enable the expansion of the useful spectrum to microwave and millimeter wave bands within the framework of 5G cellular communication. Finally, there will be a discussion of antenna design relating to implementing MIMO in small portable devices.

Who Should Attend

Those working on developing wireless systems for cellular and Wi-Fi networks, as well as the Internet of Things would benefit from this course.  A degree in engineering or physics and at least a basic familiarity with probability and matrix manipulation is recommended.

Learning Objectives

Participants in this course will:

  • learn how antenna spatial diversity combats multipath fading
  • learn how a channel is defined and what is channel state information
  • understand how large capacity increases can be obtained over given bandwidth and S/N resources
  • learn how MIMO is implemented in cellular and Wi-Fi networks
  • become aware of the practical limitations and implementation issues associated with MIMO.

    • Multipath – from obstacle to enabler
    • Antenna configurations – from single to multiple antennas on each side of the link
  • The channel matrix – how to define the characteristics of a multipath channel (15m)
  • MIMO and Shannon – Does MIMO break Shannon’s capacity limit rule? (15m)
  • MIMO modes (60m)
    • Diversity – Alamouti algorithm
    • Beam forming – how to create and aim the antenna pattern electronically
    • Spatial multiplex – use of precoding and shaping to unravel the multipath signals
  • MU-MIMO (Multi-user MIMO) – simultaneous independent data links to multiple users over a common time-frequency resource (15m)
  • Massive MIMO – 3D pointing and capacity enhancement (15m)
  • MIMO applications (30m)
    • MIMO in LTE and 5G
    • MIMO in Wi-Fi
  • Antennas – problems of incorporating and decoupling multiple antenna elements in handsets (15m)

Each registered participant receives a copy of instructor slides and access to the recording of the course for 20 business days after the live lecture. Earn 0.3 IEEE Continuing Education Units for participating.
