Take Action Now to Improve Your Resume in 2016

There are still a few months left in 2016 to achieve your goals and take steps to improve your resume this year.  If you want to enter 2017 with a stronger set of skills and experiences, now is the time to think about what you can do and which actions will add the greatest value to your professional credentials.  A few strategic steps can make a significant impact and set you apart from your peers.

Professional Communications Skills
Being able to clearly communicate your ideas as well as translate your customer’s needs into achievable solutions is an invaluable skill to have.  Refining your written and verbal communication skills can make a big impact on your career.  If this is an uncomfortable area for you, it’s time to learn how to reduce your anxiety and get practice in improving this skill. 

As noted in the recent Design News blog post, “5 Communications Skills Needed to Advance an Engineering Career” by Mitch Maiman, Intelligent Product Solutions, Maiman notes that “Engineers do not necessarily need to become card-carrying sales people, however, they do need to be able to sell their ideas. In interactive discussions with technical and management team members, or even with clients, it is necessary to present your story well. Doing so helps convince others of the merit of your “case,” and furthermore, builds confidence in your perspective as a professional. It is about relationship building; an engineer who can prepare and deliver a clear, concise, and believable message will come across well.”

To improve your skills in this area, consider taking courses either in-person or online.  There are a number of training opportunities available for a fee and at no charge. One option is a free online MOOC offered by Purdue University titled “Communicating Strategically” which focuses on “improving communication skills and presentation effectiveness for scientists, engineers, and professionals.”   Also, the IEEE Professional Communications Society has a number of eLearning offerings to explore on their website.  Topics covered include, Thinking and Interacting Like a Leader, The Power of Presentations: Make Yours Informative, Persuasive, & Memorable, and Improving Workplace Email Using the STOP Method. 

Professional Certification
Earning a professional credential or certificate in your area of expertise is a strong way to display your value to employers and clients.  Successfully earning IEEE WCET Certification helps you to demonstrate that you have a thorough understanding of different key technologies in the wireless arena, local market implications of wireless communications, and new technology / standards development.  The last chance to earn this globally recognized credential is quickly approaching.  Application deadline for the upcoming WCET Certification testing period is 9 September.  Apply now so that you can earn this credential before 2017.

For communications engineers in Japan, IEEE ComSoc Partner MCPC offers a certification program that is a great step on the path to IEEE WCET Certification.  MCPC’s Mobile System Engineering Certification Program (MSEC) “is for Information and Communications Technology (ICT) systems engineers, sales engineers and sales representatives, as well as engineers and managers of the information systems division for all companies involved in ICT-related consulting.” 

Adding a professional certification to your credentials can be an effective way to stand out amongst your peers, show employers your commitment to the profession, and distinguish your significant experience in the industry.

IEEE WCET™ & MCPC of Japan First Delivery

A message from Dr. Mohamed M.A. Moustafa, Chair, IEEE WCET Recertification & Accreditation Committee.

The IEEE Communications Society (ComSoc) WCET Recertification and Accreditation Committee is pleased to announce the first WCET recertified applicant from MCPC of Japan, IEEE WCP, Mr. Hiroshi Katsurauma.

In March 2016 IEEE ComSoc signed an updated agreement with its partner, MCPC of Japan, which stated that earning MCPC’s Senior Mobile-System Consultant (SMC) recertification for two periods qualifies that IEEE WCP to earn half of the required Professional Development Units (PDUs) needed to apply for WCET recertification.  In keeping in line with current IEEE WCET Recertification rules, PDUs must be earned in 3 or more WCET knowledge areas between the SMC recertification and the remaining PDUs to qualify for WCET Recertification.

The agreement comes as a result of the coordinated efforts between the two parties over the last few years.  The implementation of this agreement resulted in the first outcome in August 2016.
