IEEE Wireless Communications Professionals (WCPs) have already proven knowledge in the core areas of expertise in wireless communications engineering, but they still have to keep ahead with the latest advancements in technology to stay competitive. There are a number of initiatives that IEEE ComSoc is supporting that you may want to learn about to keep up to date on these emerging technologies. IEEE Green ICT is one of the initiatives that was created to “build a holistic approach to sustainability through ICT by incorporating green metrics throughout IEEE technical domains.”
IEEE 5G is another Initiative that focuses on the “next generation wireless network technology that is expected to significantly increase data speeds, produce ultra-low latency times, support the connection of many more devices, and increase energy efficiency of the network elements.”
If you are interested in NFV or SDN, then you will want to learn more about the IEEE Software Defined Networks initiative. “SDN and NFV are creating the conditions to reinvent Telecommunications network and service architectures: in fact, in the long term most (if not all) network and service functions could be virtualized and dynamically allocated onto an underneath physical infrastructure.” Explore the latest publications, educational offerings, standards, and meetings/conferences in these emerging areas on each of the initiatives’ websites.
IEEE GLOBECOM is one of two flagship conferences of IEEE ComSoc (together with ICC) and is being held in Washington, DC. USA on 4-8 December 2016. The theme of this year’s conference is Freedom through Communications. This year’s technical program features 910 Symposia Presentations, 24 Tutorials, and 20 Workshops.
Among many educational events, there is a unique 3-day course on “Intensive Wireless Communications” to be held on 5-7 December. This course covers seven key areas in which every professional working in wireless should be proficient. The course will also be webcast via WebEx for those unable to participate in person.

On 4 November 2016 at the IEEE Operations Center in Piscataway, NJ, USA, representatives from IEEE ComSoc and MCPC of Japan met to discuss their continued partnership and plans for 2017.
Representatives from Japan included Nick Yamasaki, Acting Chair, MCPC MSEC (Mobile System Engineering Certification) Committee and Satoshi Nagano, MCPC WCET WG Chair. Rulei Ting, Director of Educational Services Board, Susan Brooks, Executive Director, Adam Greenberg, Technical Activities & Industry Outreach Director, and Tara Gallus, Certification and Professional Education Manager participated in the meeting representing IEEE ComSoc. IEEE ComSoc looks forward to continued collaborations with MCPC of Japan and another successful year!

Fall 2011 IEEE WCPs: Your IEEE WCET™ renewal deadline has been extended!
A message from Dr. Mohamed M.A. Moustafa, Chair, IEEE WCET Recertification & Accreditation Committee.
Responding to requests from many WCP credential holders who originally earned IEEE WCET Certification in Fall 2011, the IEEE Communications Society WCET Recertification & Accreditation Committee has extended the recertification deadline to 30 April 2017. To keep your credential active, you will need to renew your certification before this extended deadline.
If you choose to recertify through the path of showing the earned Professional Development Units (PDUs), the committee is confident that your experience and self-development during the last five years will meet the criteria for recertification. Should you have any difficulty completing the application form, you can send us your up-to-date resume and we can help you fill out the application.
An alternate option to recertify is to sit for the WCET Certification Exam during the next testing period, from 17 April through 13 May 2017. Should you choose to recertify by taking the exam, your request must be received no later than the end of the current application period which closes on 31 March 2017.
