Call for Papers

Multi-tier computing is a new system-level computing architecture that distributes computing, communication, networking and storage capabilities anywhere between the cloud and the end-user to take full advantage of the resources available along its continuum, thus extending the traditional cloud computing architecture to the edge of the network. Massive MIMO, intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) and artificial intelligence (AI) are the key technologies for next-generation wireless networks in 5.5G and 6G. Their integration with multi-tier computing will promote rapid development of the intelligent Internet of Things (iIoT) through efficient task offloading of computation-intensive tasks for the iIoT applications, such as augmented reality & virtual reality, industrial robots and intelligent cars, so as to enable efficient collaborative computing and multi-dimensional communication, caching, computation resource sharing. However, realizing the full potential of next-generation wireless communication technologies in practical multi-tier computing scenarios is challenging, and there are still many important open research problems.

This special issue aims to provide a forum for the latest advances in multi-tier computing for next-generation wireless networks research, innovations, and applications, in order to bridge the gap between theory and applications. We solicit high-quality original research papers on topics including, but not limited to:

  • Massive Multiple-input multiple-output aided multi-tier computing
  • IRS-aided multi-tier computing
  • Interplay between edge AI and multi-tier computing
  • Resource management and service caching for multi-tier computing
  • Fundamental limits and performance analysis of multi-tier computing
  • Ultra-reliable low-latency multi-tier computing
  • Massive multiple access schemes for multi-tier computing
  • Machine learning aided task offloading
  • Task offloading for robotic communications and integrated terrestrial and aerial 6G networks
  • Definition of uses cases, application scenarios, and techno-economic analysis
  • Forecasting of demand for multi-tier resources for 5G and beyond
  • Physical layer security and privacy issues for multi-tier computing
  • Federated learning techniques for multi-tier computing
