Vice President, Conferences

Publications are an essential and indispensable venue for sharing new scientific discoveries, engineering breakthroughs, and technical tutorials and surveys. In this issue of IEEE Communications Magazine, I am pleased to introduce Chengshan Xiao, Vice-President for Publications, who will share with us his plans for delivering timely, in-depth, and high-quality technical information on a wide variety of communications and networking topics to our community and the world, and for enhancing member benefits as well.

Chengshan Xiao is the Chandler Weaver Professor and Department Chair of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Lehigh University, Pennsylvania, USA. He has been very active within the IEEE Communications Society in the last two decades. He was the Editor-in-Chief of IEEE Transactions on Wireless Communications (2010–2013), Director of Conference Publications (2014–2015), founding Chair of the IEEE Wireless Communications Technical Committee (2007–2008), Awards Committee Chair (2018–2019), Member-at-Large on the Board of Governors (2012–2014, 2019–2021), Steering Committee Chair of IEEE Transactions on Wireless Communications (2015–2016), Technical Program Chair of the 2010 IEEE International Conference on Communications, and Technical Program Co-Chair of the 2017 IEEE Global Communications Conference. He has been an IEEE Fellow since 2010 and was a ComSoc Distinguished Lecturer (2011–2013) and VTS Distinguished Lecturer (2011–2015). He received the 2014 IEEE ComSoc Joseph LoCicero Award for Exemplary Service to Publications and the 2017 IEEE ComSoc Harold Sobol Award for Exemplary Service to Meetings and Conferences.

IEEE ComSoc currently sponsors 13 journals, 5 magazines, and 4 online publications including best readings and newsletters. In addition, a new journal on machine learning in communications and networking will be launched later in 2022. We have seven positions for new Editors-in-Chief (EiCs) to be filled in 2022, open calls for nominations of six EiC positions have been announced via broadcast emails to all ComSoc members, and one more open call will be announced in Fall 2022. In order to provide excellent services to our authors, readers, and members, we will focus on achieving the following four objectives:

  • Enhancing diversity (including gender, geographical region, seniority, ethnic, industry and academia sectors) among the publication leadership team and volunteers
  • Broadening open access and further strengthening the performance (e.g., quality, timeliness, and fairness) of all journals and magazines, especially newly created ones
  • Updating and expanding technical topics to maintain and improve ComSoc’s world-wide leadership position in the broadest areas of communications and networking
  • Promoting early career professionals and recruiting industry colleagues to get involved in journal and magazine Editorial Boards and review processes

The ComSoc Publications Council has a dedicated and experienced team of IEEE ComSoc volunteers and staff members. Our Publications leadership team includes Octavia Dobre as the Director of Journals, Nei Kato as the Director of Magazines, Ekram Hossain as the Director of Online Content, Sinem Coleri as a non-voting member, and Christina Keller, Director of Production & Portfolio Management, as a staff member. The journals board is responsible for the oversight of ComSoc journals, the magazines board is responsible for the oversight of ComSoc magazines, and the online content board is responsible for initiating, accessing, and overseeing ComSoc online content. The voting members of these three boards are listed on the website of the ComSoc Publications Council.

We are currently working with the ComSoc Board of Governors to provide enhanced membership benefits such as more options of free downloadable journals and magazines in the near future. Our publications leadership team strives to serve our authors, readers, and members. Please feel free to contact us if you have comments and suggestions. Thank you!
