Standards in Communications

Our members and volunteers are an integral part of the development and implementation of standards in the communications field. IEEE ComSoc provides platforms for thought leaders in the field to discuss a variety of standards-related topics in the area of communications and networking via its Standards Magazine and Boards.

Working closely with the IEEE Standards Association, dedicated individuals with extensive communications technology experience facilitate standards development in communications, networking, and related fields through our Standards Activities.

Standards Boards

IEEE ComSoc members serve on several boards that help to shape the strategic focus and operational decisions on behalf of the Society. IEEE ComSoc's two Standards Boards play an important role in overseeing all Society activities and programs related to new and existing standards development.

The Standards Development Board promotes and advances communications standards in partnership with the IEEE Standards Association. The Standardization Programs Development Board manages pre- and post-standardization activities, such as:

  • Research Groups
  • Compliance testing
  • Standards education
  • Standards workshops & conferences
  • Publications on technical issues that are relevant to standards

If standards development and implementation are in your area of high interest or expertise, contact the appropriate Board Committee Chairs for more information on how you can contribute your expertise.

IEEE Communications Standards Magazine

IEEE ComSoc’s quarterly magazine addresses various areas of communication networking standards, including:

  • The role of standards in technical innovation in communications
  • The effect of intellectual property on communication technology standardization
  • Research on standardization methodologies in communications
