Position Statement

ComSoc has consistently led the way in the communications and networking industry. With an unwavering commitment to our members, I pledge to actively pursue the following objectives:

  • Enhance the public visibility of ComSoc and promote the value of our profession.
  • Elevate the quality of publications, conferences, and educational services.
  • Strengthen ComSoc's global leadership by fostering emerging and disruptive technologies.
  • Increase industry engagement in our technical activities, standards, and local chapters to facilitate networking.
  • Empower chapters, technical committees, and industry communities through improved funding and support.
  • Enhance benefits and develop value-added programs, particularly those accessible to all segments of ComSoc membership, including students, young professionals, academics, and industry members.
  • Implement cost-effective strategies to reduce service costs while enhancing service quality.
  • Support economically disadvantaged members to enhance their participation in ComSoc activities.
  • Promote diversity and inclusion in our leadership and volunteer positions, including gender, geographical region, working sector, age, and other dimensions.
  • Foster integrity, openness, and inclusiveness by developing transparent processes.

My substantial experience within ComSoc, encompassing key positions such as Vice-President Conferences, Vice-President Technical and Educational Activities, Vice-President Publications, Vice-President Member Relations, Director of Online Services, Director of Conference Development, and Director of the Latin America Region, has provided me with an invaluable perspective that enables me to effectively lead and drive successful projects. If given the opportunity to serve, my utmost commitment will be directed toward advancing ComSoc for the betterment and benefit of all its members.

Biography 

Nelson Fonseca holds a Ph.D. from the University of Southern California. He is a Full Professor at the State University of Campinas in Brazil. With a global outlook, Nelson has delivered lectures and collaborated on research projects worldwide. Presently, he holds the position of Chair of the ComSoc Strategic Planning Committee.

Nelson served in various pivotal roles such as Vice-President Conferences, Vice-President Technical and Educational Activities, Vice-President Publications, Vice-President Member Relations, Director Conference Development, Director Latin-America Region, and Director Online Services. Additionally, he served as the Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE Communications Surveys and Tutorials.

Nelson has been instrumental in founding several initiatives within ComSoc, including the Conference Travel Grant Program, Student Competition, IEEE Networking Letters, IEEE LATINCOM, and NFV-SDN.

Nelson received the IEEE ComSoc Education Award, IEEE ComSoc Harold Sobol Award for Exemplary Service to Meetings and Conferences, and the IEEE ComSoc Joseph LoCicero Award for Exemplary Service to Publications.
